About this deal

It’s adapted by screenwriter Rose Lewenstein from a book by Londoner Beth O’Leary, which was hailed as a ‘ Sleepless In Seattle for the 21st century’ when it came out in 2019. Alongside those gushing Nora Ephron comparisons, ‘The Flatshare’ also had critics reaching for Richard Curtis parallels, although the kind of flat it’s set in is nothing like the chi-chi west London pads that pop up in Curtis’s movie. What is Flatshare about? The Flatshare is a British comedy drama series based on Beth O'Leary's 2019 novel of the same name. The series was developed by 42 in association with VIS for Paramount+. It premiered on 1 December 2022. The inspiration for Beth O’Leary’s quirky and clever debut novel came from living with her doctor boyfriend while he worked nights. They never saw each other during this phase of their relationship, yet Beth could tell how her boyfriend was feeling from little clues he left around their apartment, and it made her wonder what it would be like to live with someone you have never met. There’s a subtlety to the characterization and a light touch to the novel but there’s also some emotional heft. Things get more serious as the book unfolds, but all of it is handled delicately and thoughtfully.

I loved this book. The story unfolds as it goes along and you gradually realize there’s a lot more going on than it seemed at first. I wasn’t all that impressed initially because at the beginning Tiffy seems kind of shallow and flighty. I continued reading because I loved Leon’s POV. He’s an introvert who doesn’t talk a lot and his POV is full of staccato, abbreviated sentences. (They remind me of medical charting which makes sense given his profession.) This may be the first book I’ve read where I identify more with the hero than the heroine. Jessica admits to being no stranger to strange flatshares during her student days. "When I was a student in London I saved cash by renting a living room in a shared house,’ she explains. ‘I thought it was a great idea at the time, but it meant everyone was in my bedroom all day long until 10pm! Leon is a quieter, more introverted person and likes to make decisions slowly, in a thoughtful manner. He doesn’t have Tiffy’s impulsivity or her social nature, but he’s terrific with his patients and later, supportive and understanding of Tiffy.Tiffy is quirky and accepting; for example, she’s tall but open to dating someone shorter (Leon is tall too, though) and nice to the crochet lady. And she is gabby and social and warm. In February 2022, it was announced Jessica Brown Findlay and Anthony Welsh would star as the leads Tiffy and Leon. Also joining the cast were Bart Edwards, Shaq B. Grant, Shaniqua Okwok, and Jonah Hauer-King. A chef I know couldn’t sit through 10 minutes of The Bear because he said it was a busman’s holiday. I tried to watch Danny Boyle’s Yesterday with a musician, who drowned out most of the dialogue with an excessively detailed grumble about the impracticalities of the way it portrayed recording contracts. In the same vein, journalists cannot endure TV shows about journalists without bursting a blood vessel or three. The soft-focus Tiffany inexplicably works for an edgy online magazine that seems a bit like Vice, in that it occasionally mentions ketamine and, er, street art, but it is called Bother, which mostly makes me think of posh old ladies dropping handkerchiefs and not wanting to swear in front of the great-grandchildren. Oh, Bother! Someone’s done an edgy content.

The Flatshare arrives in December 2022. (Image credit: Paramount Plus) Is there a trailer for The Flatshare? Principal photography wrapped in late-May 2022. Filming took place in Bristol, Brighton and London. Tiffy and Leon share the same one-bedroom London flat. They even share the same bed – but they have never met. She works as an editorial assistant in a small publishing house and needs to escape an abusive relationship; he’s a night nurse at a hospice and is trying to raise funds for an appeal to get his little brother out of prison. There is definitely a gap in the market for a new streaming series about being a twentysomething London enduring the city’s maddening rental market… and Flatshare could well be that show. L. Twomey turns out to be Leon Twomey, a palliative care nurse who has taken the night shifts for the extra pay. Leon needs the money to fund his effort to overturn his younger brother Richie’s unjust conviction of armed robbery. Leon’s girlfriend, Kay, is unhappy about the flats-sharing arrangement but agrees that she can’t continue to loan Leon money to pay the lawyer who’s working on his brother’s appeal. Still, she insists on vetting Tiffy. When she does, she’s relieved to assess her as no threat. But to be on the safe side, Kay insists that Leon and Tiffy never meet. The Flatshare is a romantic comedy on Paramount Plus about two roommates, played by Jessica Brown Findlay and Anthony Welsh, who never meet.

Flipping for Christmas: release date, cast, plot and everything we know about the Hallmark Channel movie It’spartly directed by The Full Monty filmmaker Peter Cattaneo andis filming in Bristol, London and Brighton. Browning, Matt (3 December 2022). "The Flatshare star pays tribute to 'patient' and 'encouraging' Jo Martin". Daily Express . Retrieved 17 December 2022. Also in The Flatshare is Bart Edwards ( The Witcher)who plays Tiffany’s ex-boyfriend Justin and Shaq B. Grant ( Gangs of London) stars as Leon’s brother Richie. Shaniqua Okwok ( It’s a Sin) and Jonah Hauer-King ( World on Fire and Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid) play Tiffany’s best friends Maia and Mo. I knew The Flatshare (Paramount+) was going to be unrealistic when, in the opening scenes, Tiffany moves into her new rented flat and almost immediately bangs a picture hook into the wall. This, I thought, is a woman who has never had to deal with an estate agent’s punitive charges. The flat turns out not to be Tiffany’s, at least not entirely: this is an adaptation of the 2019 novel by Beth O’Leary, and follows an untraditional flatsharing arrangement. Tiffany has the flat from 8pm to 8am and at weekends; she has entered into an agreement with Leon, a night nurse trying to earn extra money for what obviously turns out to be extremely big-hearted reasons, who gets his own flat from 8am to 8pm, and stays with his annoying girlfriend at weekends.Jessica Brown Findlay, who plays Tiffany in The Flatshare, says: "Tiff has had her heart broken by her ex-boyfriend when we meet her. She’s still consumed by what was a really toxic relationship, but the more she leaves that behind, the more we see her best qualities. Anthony Welsh as hospice worker Leon in The Flatshare.
