About this deal

Kline's an arrogant and obnoxious fellow who looks "nothing like a genius, and nothing like a wizard" (p. There was an extra chapter that was removed from the novel by Herbert himself, which you can read within Herbert's biography - Devil In The Dark. Aged nine, his impoverished father's theft of a pig introduced the constantly hungry boy to raw meat. In the prologue, we get some brief discussion of how the Sumerian's early history has been wholly lost to us and the (rather groundless) conclusion that there might be a "good reason" (p.

Admittedly, the characterisation isn't the greatest aspect of the novel, as you never really get to feel anything for any of the principal characters, but this does not subtract from the novel as much as one would think. Empathic Environment: From the corruptions of those within, the structure of Neath adapt itself into shadowed, amorphous creatures. There was an extra chapter named ‘Cora’s Needs’ (Chapter 19) that was removed from the novel by Herbert himself, which can be found within Herbert's biography ‘Devil In The Dark’ (2003).The final quarter of the novel is where Herbert really gets stuck in with the unashamed injection of horror into the tale. Attention to character, riveting suspense, and a satisfyingly chilling conclusion show Herbert once again to be a master of the genre. In doing so, from the very outset, Hebert has successfully managed to ramp-up the tension, mystery and increasing excitement. In fact, that paragraph is, I'd say, not only the only prose that is actually in any way noteworthy as prose in the novel but also the only moment of particularly effective writing in the entire thing.

The only female character, Cora, is one of the least convincing women I think I've come across in fiction, ever. I'm not recommending this to anyone, as it's so offensive, extremely boring, and has a "twist" at the end that you can see coming for miles. I have read lots of ancient Egyptian horror, Cabala horror, Babylonian horror, even Aztec horror, but this was my first Sumerian horror story.

Post the days of The Fog, The Rats, The Survivor I lost the feel for Herbert's work as it seemed to move away from the heights of his earlier work; The Sepulchre feels like a tentative move back to his roots with some well crafted character and story development to build the reality within which the horror can emerge and work well within. Please Note: This book has been transferred to Between the Covers from another database and might not be described to our usual standards.

Come the end, everything does come to a head, even if all the drama and (far too long in coming) action is clichéd enough for the momentarily captured hero to shout "you're crazy" (p.The horror plotline is supposedly simmering in the back of all this before bubbling to the surface and taking control, but, as I've no doubt made clear, it doesn't exactly do this. Still, such bad writing is not something this older me can readily forgive--I mean Bloch, Matheson, Lovecraft, Poe et al. This extra chapter adds an interesting addition to the novel which expands on the relationship between Liam and Cora, but was removed because Herbert thought it slowed the pace of novel down too much. In 2010, he was made the Grand Master of Horror by the World Horror Convention and was also awarded an OBE by the Queen for services to literature. And it had lots of mysterious elememts (something I particularly appreciate) that were all tied together nicely at the end.

The Corrupter: Having chosen staff comprised of worldwide miscreants, Kline nurtured the malign tendencies of each.

Vampiric Draining: By Cabala recitation, Kline attunes to, and absorbs, the draining life force of slain Human Sacrifice victims.
