About this deal

The French Foreign Legion ( French: Légion étrangère) is a corps of the French Army that consists of several specialties: infantry, cavalry, engineers, airborne troops. [8] It was created in 1831 to allow foreign nationals into the French Army. [9] It formed part of the Armée d’Afrique, the French Army's units associated with France's colonial project in Africa, until the end of the Algerian war in 1962. [10] The regiments are now mainly stationed in Metropolitan France, with some units in the overseas departments and territories (mainly in French Guiana). Nevertheless, many legionnaires of the 6th Foreign Infantry Regiment 6 e (dissolved on 31 December 1941) integrated into the Marching Regiment of the Foreign Legion R.M.L.E in 1942. Later, a thousand of the rank-and-file of the Vichy Legion unit joined the 13 e D.B.L.E. of the Free French forces which were also part (as of September 1944) of Jean de Lattre de Tassigny's successful amalgam of the French Liberation Army ( French: Armée française de la Libération), the (400,000 men) amalgam consisted of the Armistice Army, the Free French Forces and the French Forces of the Interior which formed Army B and later became part of the French 1st Army with forces also issued from the French Resistance.

While many would have preferred direct enlistment in the regular French Army, the only option immediately available was that of the Foreign Legion. On one day only (3 August 1914) a reported 8,000 volunteers applied to enlist in the Paris recruiting office of the Legion. The Pionniers ( pioneers) are the combat engineers and a traditional unit of the Foreign Legion. The sapper traditionally sport large beards, wear leather aprons and gloves and hold axes. The sappers were very common in European armies during the Napoleonic Era but progressively disappeared during the 19th century. The French Army, including the Legion disbanded its regimental sapper platoons in 1870. However, in 1931 one of a number of traditions restored to mark the hundredth anniversary of the Legion's founding was the reestablishment of its bearded Pionniers. [96] An elite soldier, you train rigorously, you maintain your weapon as your most precious possession, and you take constant care of your physical form.

The purpose of the Legion was to align the Irish hearts to the French cause in the imminent invasion of Ireland. [1] General Pierre Augereau had been ordained to lead the invasion, and wanted Irishmen to serve in his army. [2] However, the Battle of Cape Finisterre and the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 made a safe sea crossing uncertain at best, and Napoleon was forced to abandon his plans for Ireland. He shifted his focus towards Austria and Eastern Europe and launched the Austerlitz campaign in late 1805. [2] The legion remained on the French coast on garrison duty and coastal defence. While only one of several Legion units involved in Indochina, the 1st Foreign Parachute Battalion (1 er BEP) particularly distinguished itself, while being annihilated twice. It was renamed the 1st Foreign Parachute Regiment (1 er REP) after its third reformation. [43] FAMAS Valorisé (Upgraded FAMAS) is an upgraded, non-félinized version of FAMAS F1 designated for operational units of the French Army. It’s an intermediate between F1 and FÉLIN versions of the rifle, with a Picatinny attachment and laser designator. It has also the same modified bipod as the FÉLIN. The French Army was equipped with the upgraded rifle in the 2010s, including several units of the Legion (such as the 2e REI or 2e REP). Don’t confuse with a version called FAMAS Surbaissé (Decreased FAMAS) with the typically raised handguard being decreased and modernized. The Irish were rewarded by being given the honour of posting guard at the town of Lignitz ( Legnica) for Napoleon until the Imperial Guard arrived and relieved them. [ citation needed] FAMAS ( Fusil d’Assaut de la Manufacture d’Armes de Saint-Étienne– Assault rifle of the Weapons factory of Saint-Étienne) is the bullpup assault service rifle used by the Foreign Legion and other French Army forces. It was created in 1973. The Foreign Legion has been using the FAMAS since the early 1980s.

In the middle of January 1810 the 3rd Battalion was posted to Spain. In June 1810 an Army of Portugal was formed under Masséna which was composed of three Army Corps. The two battalions of the Irish Legion became part of General Junot’s 8th Corps. Before joining with the Massena's main army, Junot was detailed to secure the flank of the Army of Portugal's intended advance by capturing the city of Astorga in the Province of León. They led the assault that took the city. [2] During the battle, Captain John Allen's company's drummer boy continued to beat the charge after having lost both legs, for which he was given the French Legion of Honor. [1] The Irish Battalions remained on active service with the Army of Portugal through the sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo and Almeida, the Battle of Bussaco and the full course of the advance to the Lines of Torres Vedras. Each legionnaire is your brother in arms whatever his nationality, his race or his religion might be. You show him the same close solidarity that links the members of the same family. Coming out of a difficult Indochinese conflict, the Foreign Legion reinforced cohesion by extending the duration of basic training. Efforts exerted were successful during this transit; however, entering into December 1960 and the generals' putsch, a crisis hit the legion putting its faith at the corps of the Army. [49]
