About this deal

The Aquamanta EFX range of external filters is exclusive to Maidenhead Aquatics in the UK. Here's how it fared in our test. Well, it didn’t get any easier (although the tip about the hot water helped - thanks). Various bits wouldn’t connect as the instructions said that they should, and the filter basket end for the inlet pipe would not stay on. Then, no matter how much I tried to activate it by hand, the water would not go round the system. Despite the EFX200 being suitable for tanks up to 200 l/44 gal, both box and instructions give the recommended tank size as >200 l/44 gal! So, huge kudos to John at Maidenhead Aquatics Woking, who after advising me three times on the phone, came round to my house! It transpired that because my tank is long and low, lots of tubing needed to be cut off, and the inlet pipe attached in a different way (something to do with gravitational pull??!!). Anyway, after a lot of effort (I would never have managed it alone) it is up and running. The integrated Priming button means effortless restarting of the filter after it has been powered off and emptied. A simple button press is much easier than the pump handles fitted in many competitors external filters.

The EFX200 is the smallest in the range of four Aquamanta EFX externals and rated for tanks up to 200 l/44 gal. Large pallet items like aquariums are deemed delivered successfully with no damage once the the driver has left the property. If a report of damage is submitted after the driver has left we may be unable to assist with replacements. We recommend refusing a damaged delivery, this is the fastest resolution.

That's the filter set up. (when the beneficial bacteria get established then you can re-arrange the media as per my image). I’ve used this unit as a supplementary filter on a 300 l/66 gal aquarium to run alongside my existing external. The filter was simple to assemble and priming was a doddle. I just pushed the button a couple of times and away it went quite happily! Our replacement wool pads are also made from the same material as the original AquaManta filter media . These should be placed in the final filter chamber as they will polish the water before it is returned to the aquarium. For the money this is a great little filter — and the fact that all the media is included in the price is a great bonus. Power consumption is reasonable too. Using the phosphate remover and carbon will obviously increase running costs and Aquamanta suggest these be changed every four to six weeks.

In the top tray put the new ceramic balls (rinse them in water first to remove any dust) and top it all with the filter floss and finally the grill. The variety of media included is excellent and you get a white wool filter pad, a phosphate pad, coarse and medium foam pads, ceramic media and activated carbon. The largest filter in the range, the EFX600, has an additional chamber containing bio balls. Full instructions for setting up and installation are included, and there are clear instructions for cleaning the filter, media and impeller. Maidenhead Aquatics are delighted to bring you anotherexclusive product- the AquaManta EFX External Filter.
