About this deal

The trap - If no other player has chosen the same card, you 'fall'. Players who have fallen can no longer collect stars. Yet, you don’t want to be too selective because the only way to get points is by selecting cards. So you find yourself attempting to select enough cards to score higher than the others, but not so many that you’ll risk losing. Alone at the Top Now if you ever “fall” and reveal a card that no one else selected, all of your points you earned lose a star. This effectively halves your score for that round. The Spark - if several players have chosen the same cards, they get a spark. All these players color two stars in the corresponding box. Marking more cards could net a player more points, thus bringing them closer to winning, but the player each round who linked more cards than the others runs the risk of losing big. Like previous entries, accuracy counts for more than quantity in the long term. Players then strategically reveal certain choices they feel others in the group have made. If they match up, both score more points - it pays to think like the competition.

Stella: Dixit Universe is designed by original creator Jean-Louis Roubira and Gérald Cattiaux - responsible for last year’s Master Word. Stella certainly looks like the kind of experience a team-up of these two would create, combining language clue cards with classic Dixit illustrations. The twist, as it were, is the addition of a better layer on top of everything using dry-erase board. Each player gets a personal player board, marker and lantern token in their own color. The game board is put down. Shuffle the Dixit cards and place three rows of five cards next to each other. The remaining cards form the draw pile. At Stella there are 4 consecutive rounds that consist of the following steps: During scoring if you are "in the dark" (chose most cards) AND you fell, then deduct 1 point for each spark and super-spark. The company also claimed that the Dixit franchise had sold more than 9 million copies of the games in 40 languages since it first released in 2009. That’s no small victory, and while it doesn’t break through to the echelons of Catan or Risk it does speak to the ubiquity of a design that doesn’t rely overmuch on words to convey meaning and connections. In this review we’re sharing our thoughts on Stella, an art driven party game set in the Dixit universe. How Do You Play Stella? After each round, a row of cards is cleared out and replaced with new cards. A new word card is selected and play begins again. January 26, 2021 – New Dixit Universe Board Game Stella Announced By Libellud. The publisher has been teasing a mysterious new title with two illustrations since December and today it is finally known that this title will be Stella, a brand new type of game within the Dixit universe. The big reveal came with an image of the work in progress cover that does a good job of saying “this feels aetherial like Dixit is, but something like I have never seen”, something just a little more dangerous.

We also really appreciated that while the player is unable to score any more points once they fall, they aren’t eliminated from the round and still participate in announcing associations with other players who haven’t fallen. I love that players have these dual layers of strategy happening in the game. You only get points if you select cards that other players also selected, so you are disincentivized from having a very broad criteria for which cards you feel associates best with the word. An additional worry is that if you have choose more images than anyone else in a round, you earn less points for that whole round no matter what. Note: the latest version of the available games list is available here: https://boardgamearena.com/gamelistStella is a fantastic game for anyone who loves the art heavy, card interpretation games but isn’t looking for the performative storytelling aspect. Dixit is an enchanting card game created by game designer, Jean-Louis Roubira. Featuring stunning, ethereal illustrations by artist Marie Cardouat, Dixit immerses players in a world of imagination and storytelling. With over a dozen awards, including the 2010 Spiel des Jahres, and the 2009 As d’Or, Dixit invites you to discover 84 dreamlike illustrations and share your interpretations with other players. Accessible and elegant, Dixit is a perfect game to play with family and friends as you explore your creativity get to know your loved ones from a whole new perspective. Players who reveal a card that was also chosen by just one other person earn a Super Spark and both fill in three stars. It has both a fun yet subdued feel to it. Due to this, I think Stella is a great choice for groups that want a bit more structure to their games, aren’t looking for that more performative/creative side found in Dixit, yet still want a relaxed game they can chat over while playing. Personally, I was never a huge fan of Dixit. I know many that love it, but for me, it never landed. Stella however is the perfect spin off that fixes many of the issues I had with Dixit. Stella completely removes the judging element of Dixit and replaces it with the very clever association matching. This keeps the game moving at a great pace. There’s also no judging on which cards players chose or any story telling element yet players are still using the cards to associate with a word clue which in a way still brings in that story telling vibe.

Played using the same rules as the base game and includes new material from the Dixit 3-to-8-player refresh Each player takes turns revealing which cards they chose to match the word. If you chose the same cards as your opponent, you score points. If no one else has chosen the same card, it will cost you dearly... There are three situations. In this step, all players count the stars they have colored in this round. Each star counts as one point. You enter this per color on the results board. Players in the dark must not make any mistakes or score normally. If they do, they must subtract one star from their total score for each spark and super spark. Dixit is a game I've heard about before, and one that I had always overlooked because it sounded too simple. Now, I don't know how similar Stella is to classic Dixit, but I can tell you that Stella is very, very fun! Hello!
