About this deal

Heartbreaker" received mixed reviews from contemporary music critics, some of whom compared it heavily to Carey's previous lead singles. The song can be heard on the deluxe edition of Zac Brown Band's 2010 album You Get What You Give, as well as on the 2008 Portastatic release Some Small History. The song peaked at number 16 in Canada and at number 14 in New Zealand, although it only reached number 95 in Australia.

Jay Z's voice (presumably her ex-boyfriend's internal dialogue, as it refers to the relationship in first person) explains that when they were a couple she was a very exploitative and controlling girlfriend, frequently demanding money and sex, using him to support her female cohorts and seeing him as some kind of trophy boyfriend. I feel kinda bad saying it, because Heartbreaker is a pretty good album in its own right, but it's been four years since I last listened to this and I doubt I'll get the urge to listen to it again in the next four. Later it was released on a full length (Walkabout) originally released in Australia to commemorate their tour of the continent. Heartbreaker's probably his best album, in fairness, but it should have been a true great, a highlight of the decade. It is a comic book fantasy about LGBTQ+ teenagers, and as such, it softens any hard edges and amplifies the sweetness of the romance at its centre.

But it has a modern sophistication, too, with its emotionally articulate protagonists, who have a surprisingly mature grasp of sexuality as a spectrum. Its blues–inspired solo—his fourth since arriving in England—used pentatonic scales while showcasing his innovative approach to melody; by exploiting the increased sustain created by overdriving his amplifiers, he moved seamlessly between the middle and high registers with a fluid, singing tone. Sorry to say -- this album does nothing for me, but I will agree with most in that it is quite good.

Aside from the use of the sample and Jay-Z's verses, "Heartbreaker" contains strong female-empowering lyrics, which Carey wrote as a sort of anthem, especially because she felt that she personally has been in a similar predicament in the past.
