BookBrowse seeks out and recommends the best in contemporary fiction and nonfiction—books that not only engage and entertain but also deepen our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Learning that Leo was adopted and his reaction to being adopted made it even harder to tell him the truth since. In Rosie Walsh’s follow-up to Ghosted, The Love of My Life, Emma and Leo seem to have the perfect marriage. Pulling on that one thread unravels everything Leo thought he knew about Emma, from the reason she was let go from the BBC to her own name.Walsh masterfully shows both Emma’s and Leo’s points of view while maintaining an intoxicating air of mystery. This is a book that for some reason, I was certain I was not going to like, and it totally took me by surprise. We are disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising. A bruising and beautiful mystery that kept me guessing till the very end, The Love of My Life delivers on every level. My face almost cracked from the huge grin I had on my face as I read that part about how Leo's workmates left the office smiling, while Leo interviewed Emma on the phone about her grandmother's obituary, because they knew that Emma and Leo were already falling in love without having even met.

In the novel’s opening pages, Leo proudly tells us that his wife is an “intertidal ecologist, which means she studies the places and creatures that are submerged at high tide and exposed at low. Walsh has a good ear for dialogue, and the mystery behind Eddie’s disappearance is a particularly satisfying one. For a large portion of it, I felt as though it bounced back and forth from a contemporary fiction novel to a thriller - ultimately landing somewhere in between. To what extent do you believe it is possible for a happy relationship to be founded on colossal untruths? Told in two POV's into past and present, it will give you so many twist, turns, heartbreaks and a secret hidden so well you will not see coming. As Leo begins writing the piece, he realizes there are things he does not know about Emma, such as the cause of her mother’s death.

That Maxim de Winter guy is too aloof, too insistent on having his own way to be without a tangled past. stars--There's nothing wrong with this book, but I guess I was expecting more of an emotional punch after Ghosted. As she hypothesized the likely reasons for his disappearance (serious illness, a broken phone, death, even) I knew this was it. Walsh has created a deeply moving romance with an intriguing mystery and a touching portrait of grief at its heart. As Emma pretends everything is alright, eventually Leo is forced to confront the one question no father ever wants to ask. What kept it addictive was the interplay between Emma/Emily's life with Leo and dealing with her past. But what I found the most interesting was that uncovering those secrets was just as intriguing as finding out whether someone was a murdering psychopath. Lily marries Ryle hoping the good will outweigh the bad, and the mother-daughter dynamics evolve beautifully as Lily reflects on her childhood with fresh eyes. Her narrative is studded with evasively worded passages that lure us readers into dead ends, switchback turns, false sutures between scenes and a startling final climax.
