About this deal

No DREAM is too BIG if you just believe in yourself. And these strong, ambitious and FANTASTICALLY GREAT women prove it. They've conquered the tallest mountains, made game-changing discoveries, stood up for women's rights and protected our beautiful, fragile planet. High-voltage history … (from left) Jade Kennedy, Christina Modestou, Kirstie Skivington and Renee Lamb in Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World. Photograph: Pamela Raith I especially enjoyed the inclusion of Manchester’s own Emmeline Pankhurst – who Kate Pankhurst discovered she is related to whilst writing the book. Kirstie Skivington spoke with a broad Mancunian accent for the role, which was a nice touch.

The Bloomsbury Children’s Team THE AIM ABOUT THE BOOKS

Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World will be on tour in theatres in Southampton, Norwich, Liverpool, Aylesbury and Chichester from 6 th November 2021 to 16 th January 2022. I got my first taste of the Fantastically Great Women at West End Live last September, where they performed ‘A World of Colour’ and ‘Fantastically Great’. The former, which is sang by Frida Kahlo (Jade Kennedy), is, without a doubt, the musical’s best song. I’ve been waiting patiently to see them perform it again – this time, the real thing – and I was not disappointed. I was supposed to see the musical in Liverpool over Christmas, but, alas, covid, so it was wonderful to finally see it – especially that song.

Six The Musical is also contributing to women’s history in the theatre, but it is centred around one man and his wives, whereas this production is going across various timelines and different periods of history, including some quite recent. At BSL interpreted performances a British Sign Language interpreter stands on or at the side of the stage and interprets the spoken word and sound effects. After a hugely successful autumn premiere, the inspiring girl power musical Fantastically Great Women Who Changed the World will return in 2022 for an extensive UK tour. This empowering stage adaptation of suffragette descendent Kate Pankhurst's award-winning book is brought to life by an incredible all-female creative team. Celebrated - and often forgotten - women from history are brought to life on stage, from Rosa Parks to Sacagawea, Amelia Earhart to Marie Curie, Mary Seacole to Frida Kahlo and Jane Austen, and Pankhurst's own relative Emmeline. Inquisitive heroine Jade breaks away from her class trip to the local museum to take a peek at the Gallery of Greatness. Audiences can join Jade in meeting these incredible and inspiring women from the past: from explorers and scientists to artists and secret agents, hear the stories of some of history's independent icons who really did change the world.

Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World

Discover the untold stories of women who have helped protect our natural world, all the way through history. Definitely. You can’t wing it because they are real people, and you don’t want to either because you want to respect these women what they did and do them justice so we did a lot of research. But what was really lovely and helpful, the young cast, the girls that play Jade, started a week before us and had a week of learning, and made big posters on each of the characters, made a timeline, pictures and everything. When the adult cast started, they gave us a presentation on everyone and it was really amazing to learn from their perspective on top of our own research. and but then to have that bonding experience with everyone and talk about these women collectively. Books like that and conversations like that didn’t exist when I was at school. I didn’t learn anything about what women did at school,” says Pankhurst. “Conversations I have with children are more direct and informed now.” It’s loads of pressure to say you can change the world too, but if they leave the theatre feeling empowered to do something more with their talents, that’s a win,” Pankhurst says. Pankhurst with the cast of Fantastically Great Women Who Changed the World (Photo: Glen Jevon)She believes intervening with positive messages – via the arts – in the early years will help create more equality for girls. And she knows from her talks with schoolchildren that progress is being made. Fantastically Great Women is, essentially, to Six what Pretty Little Liars was to Desperate Housewives: a weaker, lighter take on similar themes for a younger audience. I would have loved the show if I was a kid. The children in the audience seemed to be having a great time. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed myself, and I might have even felt a little emotional at the end (when Jade was comforted by Rosa Parks and Anne Frank), but I recognise that the musical’s target audience is families.
