The Long Song was filmed in the Dominican Republic, a setting that offered grueling hot days, but also surprising beauty. Without wishing to give too much of the story away there is one particular scene which was agonizing. The abolition of slavery triggered the exploitation of the emancipated in different other ways and the hard truths are to be found in every page.

Except upon this occasion, when he finally released himself from out of her, he thrust a crumpled bolt of yellow and black cloth into Kitty's hand as a gift. Which brings me to the next concern, frankly, I didn't connect with any of the characters in the story.The Long Song is recommended as the best sort of historical fiction and a fine pick for reading groups. But, like the brightest pupil with an outworn master, she became quite insistent upon having her way. Her refusal to reduce her characters to merely their suffering does not trivialize the experience of enslavement, but underscores the humanity of all involved. Levy masterfully suffuses the inhumane cruelty of slavery with a very human frivolity and hope, and that is what differentiates this work. My mama had a story—a story that lay so fat within her breast that she felt impelled, by some force which was mightier than her own will, to relay this tale to me, her son.
