About this deal

The reissue is a particularly enticing treat for the legions of younger fans Talking Heads have picked up since their split. It also includes songs from the solo career of frontman David Byrne and by Tom Tom Club, the side project of the drummer and bassist, Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth. On the first couple of plays everything sounded fine, put away for awhile and just recently played again. Gizmodo screened the episode to Frantz and Weymouth in a video released online, where they both expressed amusement and shock at the level of detail gone into parodying the film. The first quarter or so of the performance swells gradually until the explosive, strutting funk apex of ‘Burning Down The House’, the major hit single from Speaking In Tongues.

With their infectious energy bursting through the speakers, Stop Making Sense hears Talking Heads at the top of their game, and arguably, they sound better here than they do on record. I don't know what an original vinyl sounds like (I had it on cassette back in the day), but it was digital to begin with. Almost forty years on, and it’s still considered the greatest musical performance ever captured, witnessed in its enduring legacy, Jonathan Demme’s subsequent fame found in Philadelphia and The Silence of the Lambs, a renewed interest following its incoming theatrical run, and its persisting parodies.Demme also considered including more shots of the audience reacting to the performance, as is traditional in concert films. Today, David Byrne says it’s interesting that this album was – for many people – an introduction to Talking Heads: “We had done a live album before this, but coupled with the film, and with the improved mixes and sound quality, this record reached a whole new audience. Leonard Maltin gave it four out of four, describing it as "brilliantly conceived, shot, edited and performed" and "one of the greatest rock movies ever made. Had we used them, there would have been a timestamp on the film, and it eventually would have felt dated… The absence of interviews, combined with the elegant and timeless lighting, created a film that can be watched over and over.

He jogs in place with his sidemen; he runs around the stage; he seems so happy to be alive and making music. He introduces " Psycho Killer" by saying he wants to play a tape, but in reality a Roland TR-808 drum machine starts playing from the mixing board. I have had the luxury of owning both the original Columbia Home Video expanded “Special Edition” VHS tape and Japanese laserdisc, and the only positive I can provide here is that this vinyl edition has a warmer soundstage than the original home video release, which suffers from excessive highs in both the Hi-Fi and PCM soundtracks. In many ways, these versions are more exciting than the studio recordings, so maybe that’s why a lot of folks discovered us via this record. Comprised of various labels we know and love at Rough Trade (Bella Union, ATO, Speedy Wunderground, Phantasy, Heavenly, Mute and more) PIAS [Recordings] filter through some of the most diverse artistry to our racks, which we greatly enjoy digging into.

The gunshot-like beats cause Byrne to stagger "like Jean-Paul Belmondo in the final minutes of ' Breathless', a hero succumbing, surprised, to violence that he'd thought he was prepared for. The film itself will be going back to cinemas globally this year and this new 2LP set includes the previously unreleased tracks ‘ Cities’ and ‘Big Business/I Zimbra’.

Talking Heads / Stop Making Sense 2LP vinyl reissue

Rhino’s 2LP reissue preempts the fortieth anniversary of Talking Heads’ set of four performances at Hollywood’s The Pantages Theatre in December 1983.Two years later we made the move to our present address, 35 The Headrow, where we have remained ever since. Byrne’s fidgety voice is more gutsy and magnetic than ever, their jittery funk rhythm section deals out heaps of punch, and guitars as sharp as razor wire slice through the mix.
