About this deal

What I loved: The illustrations are full of vibrant colors, and feature the very expressive Bluey on her beach adventure. These images will capture young readers' imaginations. The storyline contains a lot of bravery and a really great show of manners with Bluey being polite, even to the sea creatures in her way. These examples are great for young children, who will appreciate the context of nerves around trying something new. As Mr Pelican flies off giving us a beautiful vista of a typical quiet, Aussie beach, Bluey catches sight of Mum, and they run to meet up. Pipi's feed by taking in water and feeding on the Phytoplankton, then they squirt out the water so they can take in more. This squirt is what Bluey thinks is a "weewee". In full disclosure, I’ve never watched an episode of the hit-television series BLUEY. I first heard about the series from customers at work who begun to hound me for information on the books months prior to their release. Behrouz Boochani has received another award for his book written from an Australian-run detention centre on Papua New Guinea’s Manus Island, No Friend But the Mountains – this time for the audiobook narrated by the Farsi translator Omid Tofighian and other high-profile Australians, including Benjamin Law, Isobelle Carmody, Janet Galbraith, Mathilda Imlah, Geoffrey Robertson, Richard Flanagan, Sarah Dale, Thomas Keneally and Yumi Stynes.

The surfer that Bluey meets is voiced be surfing legend Layne Beachley, who won the World Championship seven times and is also the chair of Surfing Australia. Bluey, Bingo and Dad pull up to the “Beeeeeaaaaaaacchhhh!!!” on a skateboard as Mum walks slowly behind. Boochani, who remains in New Zealand after travelling there for a literary festival in November, now adds the Abias’ audiobook of the year award to a long list of Australian literary accolades, including the Victorian premier’s literary prize, the NSW premier’s literary prize, the National Biography award, and last year’s Abia general nonfiction award, among others. BLUEY: THE BEACH is a charming picture book about bravery and adventure. Bluey is excited to be at the beach with her family. Her mother decides to take a walk by herself along the shore. When Bluey finds a cool shell, she can't wait to show her mother. However, her mother is far away. Her father gives her the go-ahead to follow her mother's footprints in the sand. However, her journey encounters obstacles in birds and other beach surprises that she finds along the way. Once they get to the sand they commence the activities that most Australian families do upon arrival at the beach: delight in the texture of the sand, apply sun cream and zinc, set up the sunshade, play jump the waves, soak up the sunshine, make sandcastles and bury your siblings legs in the sand in a mermaid tail.

Final verdict: BLUEY: THE BEACH is a charming beach adventure about bravery and trying something new that is sure to capture young imaginations. The lift-the-flap element gives the book another later of intrigue and tactile involvement, as readers are actively participating in the story. Although lift-the-flap elements are nothing new, it’s interesting to note that they are always childhood favourites, but are elements used sparingly alongside big name characters like Spot and Peppa Pig. While widely popular, I was still surprised to find this element in the book, but loved the surprise none-the-less. The 117-Storey Treehouse, Pan Macmillan’s own children’s literary juggernaut, was not overlooked, winning book of the year for younger children (ages seven to 12). At one stage Bluey realizes she’s too far and out of hearing distance from both Mum and Dad. Now, truly alone on her walk, she must summon all her courage when she encounters a beady eyed pelican.

Helen Garner’s contribution to the books industry was recognised on Wednesday with the Lloyd O’Neil Hall of Fame award. The Indigenous press Magabala Books, Readings and the Sydney bookshop Kinokuniya also received industry awards. Bluey finds a conch shell that she wants to show Mum and surprisingly, Dad allows her to go on a solo adventure to follow Mum. Firstly though, King Neptune Bingo releases Blueys legs from the mermaid tail, so she can walk for the day. Bluey plays the "Mermaid who got her legs, but only for a day!" This is a reference to the fairytale The Little Mermaid written by Hans Christian Anderson in 1837. Most well known from the Disney movie of the same name.Kitty Flanagan won general nonfiction book of the year for her “anti-self-help” book, Kitty Flanagan’s 488 Rules for Life, while Clare Bowditch’s memoir, Your Own Kind of Girl, was awarded the Matt Richell award for new writer of the year. The font is easy to read, and I loved the choice bolded words that are good for early readers who are beginning to read. The content and length would work for toddlers through young elementary school aged readers. This book is based on an episode of the show, but it would work well for children who are fans or those who are new to Bluey. Allen & Unwin was named publisher of the year, as well as being responsible for a host of other prizewinning books, including Heather Rose’s novel Bruny, which won general fiction book of the year, while the prize for literary book of the year went to Charlotte Wood for The Weekend. The soldier crabs are depicted as walking sideways, parallel to the ocean. Real-life soldier crabs are one of the few crabs that walk forwards, and their swarms march towards the ocean, not alongside it [2].
