At first, it was like walking on a chilly road not knowing what to expect and there was this element of danger which I liked but all too soon the snow melted and the landscape turned out to be a field. The most exciting thing was maybe passing the occasional cow chowing on some grass. As a result, they may feel the need to relocate from their homes if the details of the abuse are well-known in the community. Relocating enables the victims to start over in a healthier environment where they don’t have to worry about judgment, stigma, or abusers. 6. Survivalists Under the witness protection program, the government will get you a job and schooling for your children if you have any. The police will also be assigned to protect your home. 2. Seeking Political Asylum I’ve read three books by Gillian McAllister and enjoyed each one so I was delighted when I saw that she has a new book, How To Disappear published today. But, I have mixed feelings about this book, because although it is so tense in parts and is compulsive reading – I really wanted to know what happens next – I did have difficulty in suspending my disbelief for a large part of it. I liked the originality of the story – a murder mystery that is not a police procedural or an amateur detective story, but the story of a family devastated by their experience of being in witness protection. Although I’ve seen TV dramas about witness protection I’ve never read a novel before about it.

Being forced to hide their true identities makes their connection all the more intriguing. Not being able to explain their behavior makes for a tension-filled read. Knowing what we know makes things positively nail-biting. And discovering what we don’t will stun.I read this book in two sittings over the weekend and I haven't read anything else since, it was just that good. I LOVED it! This will be in my top reads this year.

The author does a great job getting you to understand just how easy it is to find out information on people (including you) and within the first few chapters you'll be able to find more info online about yourself than you probably want out there. The author does give some tips to help keep that info to a minimum and have some of it removed. Change your style of clothing to avoid making yourself conspicuous in a crowd. If you usually dress in formal attire, switch it up to casual wear and vice versa. Some people simply want to leave their previous life and start over. Maybe you had a bad relationship or a marriage that didn’t work out. Maybe you suffered some type of public embarrassment, and you don’t want to show your face around town. Disappearing and starting over is a real option for you and may offer the opportunity for a better life. The pacing of the book is pretty fast, but it still seemed a bit long and drawn out. I liked how everything went down and the surprises that I didn't see coming. I would have liked an epilogue or a sneak peak into the future, but I also thought the ending was fitting. Honestly, I can’t stop thinking about this book. The characters were so believable and the situation they were thrust into was so awful that I defy any reader not to feel some sort of emotion or reaction.

The book is a guide on starting a new identity. It includes chapters on planning a disappearance, arranging for new identification, finding work, establishing credit, pseudocide (creating the impression of one's own death), and more. The book recommends a method of disappearing by assuming the identity of a dead person with similar vital statistics and age, and also includes a section on avoiding paper trails which, due to the age of the book, may no longer be relevant or useful. However, your case has to be credible. The credibility of your case will be measured by whether you previously filed reports of domestic violence against the abuser and if there are medical reports of injuries sustained as a result of physical abuse such cases turn out in favor of the abused party. 4. A Need to Survive The ending! THE ENDING. I might've smiled with manic glee. It was just so perfect. All along, Ann Redisch Stampler had been carefully leading us on a path that just gets crazier and more dramatic, and the conclusion was so on point. Kind of ridiculous, but oh so entertaining, just like much of the book. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. I absolutely loved How to Disappear! Can I fake my death? Yes. You have the right to fake your death as long as you don’t try to pass yourself as someone else.
