Michael Ausiello’s moving and heartfelt memoir about love and loss. I laughed, I cried…I have a new appreciation for Smurfs. That was something that, at times, I struggled with,” Ausiello says. “I was never going to go in and paint him as this perfect human specimen who had no flaws. I wasn’t interested in doing that to him, because honestly some of what people might see as his faults are what I think make him so interesting and unique and charming. a b Major, Michael. Drew Barrymore Sobs In Emotional 'Drew Barrymore Show' Interview With The Long Island Medium: "I've Had A Yearning My Whole Life For Family"

It’s the odd, uncomfortable thing about memoir writing, something we appreciate must mirror the experience of so many of our TV-star interview subjects. The people you meet know things about you, ranging from the intimate to the mundane, like your soda preferences. And, Jesus, in Ausiello’s case, they know that the love of his life, his husband Christopher “Kit” Cowan, received a terminal cancer diagnosis the day of their City Hall wedding, and died 11 months later. Spoiler Alert is both tender and raw. It almost feels inappropriate to be invited into such a deeply personal chapter of someone’s life. It’s a story about love and loss, joy and heartbreak. And in the midst of personal turmoil, we learn that bravery comes in many forms." The Washington Post

What to know

Ultimately, of course, he decided to make the film. Like Ausiello’s book, Spoiler Alert charts the entirety of Michael and Kit’s relationship—and, like the book, the fact that Kit dies is established immediately. They first met at Webster Hall in New York City’s East Village one night in 2001, not long after 9/11 happened and the city was still an eerie, uncertain place. They fell fast and hard for each other. I gotta admit that I only watched the movie because it got a good review and I was totally under the impression that it was a comedy. At first, probably the first third of the movie was walking very close to the land of gay-cliché but somehow every moment when it got close to be like that, it didn't. Then, it turned into such a touching drama that I didn't see coming despite the opening scene. The crying scene at the doctor office was one of most heartbreaking scenes I have been in a while because it was so quiet and so real. It was very well-made and well-acted movie that gave a full spectrum of emotions from the beginning to the end. At the end, I was in the verge of crying but I didn't. Instead, I feel deeply moved and I thought it was even better than crying.
