STAN AND OLLIE LOOK AND SOUND BETTER THAN EVER! New 2K and 4K digital restorations from original 35mm nitrate, Laurel and Hardy's classic comedies are here in the best quality since their first release! Two features and 17 shorts, including the legendary pie-fight silent film "The Battle of the Century," making its video debut and nearly complete for the first time in over 90 years!

Laurel and Hardy made well over one hundred films of various lengths to their combined credit as a comedy duo (spanning both the silent andConsists of less than 4 minutes of footage from the condensed pie fight footage, lifted from Robert Youngson's THE GOLDEN AGE OF COMEDY (1957) silent comedy compilation feature.

scrubbed" at times, as can probably be gleaned from some of the screenshots accompanying this review. Of key interest to fans will be a slide show reconstruction of “Hats Off,” still missing in action. This short, with Laurel and Hardy as washing machine deliverymen struggling to navigate a steep staircase, is in the DNA of “The Music Box,” the team’s lone Oscar-winning short. What I personally found most interesting viewing these early shorts was that we can literally see the two actors at the beginning of their careers as the separate players in a single film, who are in no way connected, begin to grow into one of the finest comedy teams in the history of the cinema.

Sons of the Desert Trailer (1080p; 2:35) is the Spanish language trailer, the only one known to have survived. For those who love the works of Laurel & Hardy, we owe a great debt of gratitude to finally have these equally films on Blu-ray, with Serge Bromberg and the late David Shepard at the top of the list. Normally, I would consider these restorations, but as has been noted in other threads, that term no longer applies. On the extras side of things fans of the two will be very pleased with the inclusion of some Laurel and Hardy solo comedies.

Its said that that both Stan and Ollie were unhappy with the production that included actors from France and Italy speaking in their native tongue while they spoke in English. This caused difficulties with communication amongst the cast resulting in difficulties in making the magic of comedy come to life. I'll allow readers to wonder through this release at their own speed. It's not a sit down - one and done situation. To my way of thinking, this should be an award-winning creation, that deserves a place in every serious cinema library, and especially in those who have yet to experience the works of the very English Arthur Stanley Jefferson and Oliver Norvell Hardy of the great State of Georgia. All of the films in this collection have been given an instrumental score by various composers including Eric Le Guen, Andrew Simpson, Antonio Coppola, Serge Bromberg, Ben Model, Neil Brand, Donald Sosin, and Phil Carli. The scores are presented in DTS-HD MA 2.0 stereo, and with either Dolby Surround or DTS Neural:X engaged, are fairly immersive, giving the feeling of being in an old movie house with a piano player. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy are one of the most famous and well-known comedy teams to come out of Hal Roach Studios, starting in the silent era and segued to even more success as they easily made the transition to sound. Laurel & Hardy – The Definitive Restorations is a collection of two of their feature-length adventures, a long-thought lost silent short, sixteen of their two-reel talkies, two of their special interest shorts, plus galleries, trailers, and interviews.
