About this deal

Although it is not integral to this instructable, I also plugged a wireless access point into my switch so that I can have wireless access as well. Since my wireless is both encrypted and has MAC filtering I feel comfortable with it on the "trusted" side of my firewall. If for some reason I wanted to provide open wireless access but still protect my network I would need a different configuration of connections. I won't go into detail about these changes but I wanted to note them depending on what your network goals are and how they might incorporate wireless access. https://geni.us/NetworkCableTester– Cable tester – this is essential to verify the cable and all 8 connections are correct and working before you go to use it in your network setup. Now, we will see the crossover transmission diagram. In crossover transmission, the first end contains the orange/white and orange wires in pins 1 and 2. The wires green/white in pin 3, and in pin 4, there is a blue wire. The blue/white wires are in pin 5, and the green wire is in pin 6. Brown/white and brown wire are in the pin 7 and 8. On the other end, green/white and green wires are in pins 1 and 2. Orange/white and blue wires are in pins 3 and 4. Blue/white and orange in pins 5 and 6. Brown/white and brown wires in pins 7 and 8. For me the logical location was my laundry room. My cable TV already comes into this room and gets split to each room. It is important to note that my internet comes into the house (over the cable) here too so if I move my cable modem here, it will be able to supply internet access to the entire network. Another thing to consider is the amount of space needed to mount a shelf to hold the network equipment. Cat5 cable is designed to carry data over a wired network connection at speeds of 10 Mbps (Ethernet) or 100 Mbps (Fast Ethernet). You will often see this written as 10/100 Ethernet when shopping for Cat5 cable online. This means that if your local network or incoming internet connection runs at between 10-100 Mbps (also known as a 100BASE-T network), Cat5 Ethernet cable should be able to handle the required data throughput at full speed, with no loss or delay. In basic construction terms, there are two main types of Cat5 and Cat5e cable, namely stranded core and solid core. These terms refer to how the data-carrying wires, or conductors, that make up the inner core of the cable are arranged. So that’s orange and white, solid orange, green and white, solid blue, blue and white, solid green, brown and white, solid brown. When wiring an Ethernet cable, like a Cat 5, it’s crucial to follow the right wiring diagram. If you wire an Ethernet cable wrong, it might lead to several issues. Let’s explore some of them: No ConnectionCat5 and Cat5e are two common classifications of Ethernet or network cabling. The Cat5e specification came into widespread use after 2001, before which Cat5 had been the latest standard. What are the differences between PVC, riser and plenum-rated cables?". Archived from the original on 2011-07-13. [ self-published source] Category5 is currently defined in ISO/IEC 11801, IEC 61156 and EN 50173, though it was originally defined in ANSI/ TIA/EIA-568-A (with clarification in TSB-95). [5] These documents specify performance characteristics and test requirements for frequencies up to 100MHz. First the cable modem setup. Since I moved my cable modem from my second bedroom (office) to the distribution room I needed to change the way my cable was split. Rather than the main cable into the house being split 3 ways I split things a little differently. I split the incoming cable with a 3-way splitter first. 1 to the main TV, 1 to the 2-way splitter for TV in the bedrooms and the other into the cable modem. I connected the splitters using a male-male barrel connector. Cat5 is also used to carry other signals such as telephony and video. [17] In some cases, multiple signals can be carried on a single cable; Cat5 can carry two conventional telephone lines as well as 100BASE-TX in a single cable. [18] [19] [20] [21] [22] The USOC/RJ-61 wiring standard may be used in multi-line telephone connections. Various schemes exist for transporting both analog and digital video over the cable. HDBaseT (10.2 Gbit/s) is one such scheme. [23] Characteristics [ edit ]

However it is worth noting that unless you are planning on pushing 10G ethernet over them ( up to 40M ) then you might as well use a Cat 5e cable. What is written above will be understood more when we will see the templates of the wiring diagram. TIP: Do your best to run the wire along the path it will follow between the two devices. Do not pull the cable tight between two points and be sure the cable is not kinked or tightly pulled around corners. The cable should have a little wiggle room. Cat5 cable is broken into two separate categories: Cat5 and Cat5E cables. Cat5 has become obsolete in recent years, due to its limitations compared to Cat5E and Cat6 cables . Although the Cat5 cable can handle up to 10/100 Mbps at a 100MHz bandwidth (which was once considered quite efficient), the newer versions of Cat cables are faster .

See to the right for a Cat5e cable diagram, showing the basic construction of different types of Cat5e Ethernet cables. Sorry, I know this is resurecting an old thread, but I felt like I needed to put my 2 cents in...simply because I've gone through this recently at my new workplace and am looking into "testing" all the lines that have been run in the last 10 years. Cat5 and Cat5e cables support speeds up to 100Mbps and have four twisted pairs of internal cables. Ethernet cable uses two of the four wires for its function, one for transferring data and the other for receiving data. When these two wires are wired incorrectly, the ethernet is smart enough to use the other two pairs from the four pairs. Most Category5 cables can be bent at any radius exceeding approximately four times the outside diameter of the cable. [29] [30] Maximum cable segment length [ edit ]

Cross-talk occurs when signals from one pair of wires interfere with signals from another. This can degrade the quality of your connection and may even result in data loss. Proper wiring of Ethernet cables following the cat 5 cable diagram reduces cross-talk and interference. Damage to Network Devices These are the cables commonly used in large data centers, computer networking offices, and homes. What Is Included in a Cat5 Cable? Fast-forward to the early 1990s and Category 3 cable, which is often called the first modern networking cable, boosted the cable's frequency to 16MHz and Ethernet performance to 10Mbps. By contrast, Category 4 cable pushed this to 20Mhz and roughly 16Mbps but it was used for Token Ring – rather than Ethernet – networks. The Category5e specification improves upon the Category5 specification by further mitigating crosstalk. [9] The bandwidth (100MHz) and physical construction are the same between the two, [10] and most Cat 5 cables actually happen to meet Cat 5e specifications even though they are not certified as such. [11] Category5 was deprecated in 2001 and superseded by the Category5e specification. [12] The standard assembly for basic Cat5 cable is often U/UTP, while many high-quality Cat5e Ethernet cables are manufactured with at least some form of additional shielding built-in. This shielding helps to protect the carried signal from several forms of interference, minimising the risk of data corruption or network connection loss.TIP: If this is the second end of the wire, look at the end that is already terminated to ensure the cables are the same on both ends. If you made a mistake on your first end, this is your opportunity to fix it by configuring your wires the same way as the terminated end. Armed with the knowledge of the cat 5 cable diagram, you can now wire your own cat 5 cable. Tools You’ll Need Cat5 Spec, cat6 specs, cat7 spec - Definitions, Comparison, Specifications". Plenum-rated cables are slower to burn and produce less smoke than cables using a mantle of materials like PVC. Plenum-rated cables may be installed in plenum spaces where PVC is not allowed. [41] [ self-published source?] Anthony, Sebastian (2016-09-29). "Here comes 5Gbps networking over standard cables". Ars Technica . Retrieved 2021-01-18. The tolerances for Cat 5e, in terms of amount of un twisted cable you could have in the plug, were tight already. Cat 6 and you don't really stand a chance. In day-to-day practical terms, most users will chiefly be interested in what internet speeds or data transfer speed each standard support. Internally, much tighter specs need to be adhered to ensure conformity to each of the standards. Each iteration of the spec from CAT5 to CAT6 simply makes for more stringent requirements. One of the CAT6 specs requires separation distance of the twisted pairs to prevent cross talk. The most common way by manufacturers to achieve this distance is a plastic insert that runs the entire length of the cable. The plastic insert looks like a "+" sign if you crossection it and each of the 4 pairs of wire then can fit in each quadrant of that insert. It's like having 4 workers separated in cubicles (each pair of singal cables being a worker) and allowing said workers to carry more private phone converstation than if the cubicle walls didn't exist. Assemble the wires into a fan shape and organize for the data plug. There are two common ways to organize the wires for the data plug. Regardless of which one you use, both ends of the cable MUST use the same configuration otherwise the cable will not work. And if you want straight-through transmission, then you must align those colored wires using the diagram below.
