In ME1 you could only wear one helmet type and it looked kinda weird IMO. It was also annoying taking it on and off for situations where I thought it would be most fitting, although at least we had the option to toggle it at will in ME1. While ME1 had a pretty basic relationship with helmets, ME2's relationship with them is straight up awkward. It introduces an actual stat buff (although minor) for wearing a helmet, but it always feels strange that you can't have any of your teammates wear helmets and makes Shepard feel out of place with their squad. It's also really weird how a ton of animations appear to be designed around Shepard not wearing a helmet and there's a ton of colliding head animations throughout the game. I don't know the situation with open-faced helmets in Andromeda, but I do hope they open faced variants in Mass Effect 4 if they let you equip your squad mates with helmets like in ME1 and ME3.
