About this deal

First, hang up your curtain by slipping your rod through the tabs on the top. From here you can decide how deep you want your hem to be. Some people like their curtains to kind of pool on the floor. I personally like them to be just touching the floor.

For beginner sewers, the cotton fabric will always be the easiest to sew. Read my article on fabric names for some other fabric suggestions. Scissors specifically for sewing are significantly different than general-use scissors; a good pair of sewing scissors will last you your entire life if you take care of them. I’ll get a little snobby here and say that using tape to make your curtains is not worth your time. You can sew DIY curtains easily in about 30 minutes. For the main fabric – add 8” to the finished length required (6” for the hem and 2” to turn under the heading tape at the top), plus any extra length required for pattern match. For the curtain lining add 6” to the finished length required (4” for the hem and 2” to turn under the heading tape.)Cut a length of eyelet tape to match the width of your curtain fabric. You can do this by measuring the eyelet tape to the same width of the curtain fabric, or by laying the tape out onto your cut-out curtain fabric to eyeball the width. Once you know how much eyelet tape you need, cut 1 piece for each curtain panel.

Please Note: Should you find that your finished curtains are slightly creased then before hanging them you may decide to iron them. If doing so then please follow the care instructions of the the fabric and in particular, for velvet fabrics you should only lightly iron the reverse side of fabric, placing a damp tea towel between the iron and the fabric to offer an extra level of protection.Personalized Lilo And Stitch Quilt, Disney Lilo And Stitch Quilt, Stitch Twin Size Quilt, Stitch Bedding Quilt, Funny Lilo Stitch Quilt Add ribbon to make the curtains hang nicely. I got this idea from an inexpensive pair of IKEA curtains. Cut several 3 inch pieces of ribbon and space them along the top edge of the curtain. I used about 9 pieces and spaced them roughly 5″ apart. On my next visit to my local fabric store, I asked the ladies at the counter if there was a book or guide available for how to make curtains. It was quiet that day, and the ladies were up for a chat. They told me I didn’t need a book and talked me through the basics of how to make curtains. They showed me the secret to easily making professional-looking curtains – curtain header tapeand told me that sewing curtains is really just straight stitching – really, really long straight stitching. Add 16 in (41 cm) to your desired curtain length measurement. You’ll need to add some additional fabric to account for the top and bottom hems. Once you know how long you want your finished curtains to be, add 16 in (41 cm) to reach your curtain fabric length. [7] X Research source It will help you have a place for your curtain rod to slide through without having to having to waste a lot of extra fabric at the top of your curtain. The other reason why I love it is that it also provides some stabilization for the fabric. Curtains with some kind of heavy interfacing or curtain tape at the top hang better.

The best stitch to use on most curtain fabrics is a straight stitch with a medium length of around 2.5. If you have a specialty fabric you may have to adjust this. Curtains use a lot of thread so make sure you have a couple of spare bobbins wound. Iron and ironing board. Delicate fabrics may need a pressing cloth so the iron doesn't touch them directly. Use grommet tape to save time in making sure the grommets are evenly spaced, reinforcing the holes while you’re at it. Tip: make sure you buy matching diameters for your grommets and grommet tape! They come in different diameters! Snip any loose threads that may be lingering, then clip the curtain rings to the top of both panels, spacing them evenly, and hang them on a curtain rod. Cut the same number of lengths of lining fabric to the calculated length (= finished length + 6” hem allowance) With right sides together (and making sure half widths line up where applicable), pin the main fabric and lining fabric together. With the side edges flush, move the bottom of the lining up half an inch from the bottom of the curtain before you start pinning, in effect making the linings a little shorter than the curtains. Sewing your own curtains is a great way to save money on home decor and get a custom look for your home. Read more about this easy method on how to sew curtains. Draw a scaled drawing of the window and then write in the measurements of the space to be covered. You can take this to the fabric shop. Measuring Width Measuring Length

Measure from the curtain rod to where you want the bottom of the curtain to sit. Use a tape measure to determine how long you should make your curtains. Measure from the top side of the curtain rod down to where you want the hem of your curtain panel to sit. [5] X Research source The length depends on how long you want to make your eyelet curtains. Start stitching the tape across the top of the curtain close to the top edge of the tape. When you get close to the end, cut off the tape a couple inches past the second side. However, a sewing machine isn’t essential; you can sew a beautiful pair of curtains with a handheld needle and thread too. Step One: Prepare the Fabric Curtains are one of the easiest and most useful things to make: it can be very difficult to find just the right curtains for your windows, and making them yourself means you can make them exactly to your own personal preference.
