About this deal

They're the very normal tamper shape, with a wooden handle & a stainless steel base. As you'll see shortly, Motta do explore the slightly unusual when it comes to tamper shapes.

The Coffeeworks began as a project involving coffee bloggers (coffee blog readers – so that now includes you), in which I ran a series of polls to find out what readers were looking for. It often makes consumers confused about whether to choose a tamping mat or a tamping station. If you are in the same situation, why don’t you try a combination of both items? BooTaa Espresso Tamper Mat is crafted for both purposes. OK so that's my advice on tampers, and as you can see there are loads & loads to choose from – and really, you can't go wrong, as long as you're selecting the right tamper for your portafilter.

Should you tamp coffee grounds?

Before I sign off, just to deal with a few commonly asked questions: How hard should you tamp coffee? This is another rosewood handle and stainless steel base pair, but a slightly different shape than usual, both the base and the handle. I've got a tamper very similar to this, and I like the look and feel of it. This is another great deal from Shop Coffee, as this is a really well known brand, who produce some decent stuff, and this tamper is cheaper than some of the other non-branded (or branded with unknown brand names) tampers. Not only will it help, but I believe that improving your tamper and therefore your tamping, is one of the low-hanging fruit where espresso making is concerned.

The amount of pressure applied should be as small as possible , without sacrificing any of the above. Repetitive strain injuries are too common amongst Baristas, so aiming for the lightest pressure that works is key. You want to control the flow rate of your espresso by adjusting grind size, not tamping pressure. How do you tamp flat? This tamping mat has fundamental features and no extra space to organize your espresso accessories. Not really. There's lots of debate about portafilter size and shape, and while some assume that the larger 58mm portafilter size is better because this is what most professional machines use, this isn't necessarily because it's the best, it's more about standardization. One of which is the simple and inexpensive action of improving their tamper and some of the others are equally as easy and similar in terms of cost! These tools work on the surface only, and they do nothing with distribution, even though they're often sold as “distribution tools” or “coffee distributors”, they level the surface, so they're levelers.

A note on injury: The idea of tamping injuries may seem silly, but the definitely do occur within the barista community. Repetitive strain is a common cause of injury and poor tamping form can mean wearing an embarrassing brace for the duration of the healing process. I make no apologies for the fact that I'm obsessed with coffee ;-), I'm sure you'd expect nothing else from someone who actually makes his living from writing & talking about it all day! So, as you can probably imagine, I have lots of coffee tools & accessories, including WDT tools. No, tampers vary in size to reflect the size of the portafilter that comes with your coffee machine, which is why I've categorized the tampers above into the most common sizes.

Hold your portafilter firm and level on the tamp mat or stand (it’s important that the portafilter basket is flat, and that you are not tamping at an angle). Grasp your tamper as if you are shaking hands with a doorknob, and apply light, even, and equal force to the coffee bed. What can I use instead of tamper espresso? Tamping mats are an easy to clean silicon or rubber tamping surface which reduces stress on your wrists from repetitive tamping. This is a must have coffee accessory for anyone that owns an espresso machine. They are made from high quality, anti slip rubber that protects your bench and portafilter from damage. Do I need a tamp mat? This is a Lelit tamper, Aluminium handle with stainless steel base, and very specifically 57.35mm, to perfectly fit the Lelit 57mm baskets for the Lelit Anna & Lelit Kate. The best distribution method in my humble opinion, and one of the most popular over the past few years, is called the WDT, or the Weiss Distribution Technique.

Unfortunately many of these are pretty flimsy, often made from plastic or some cheap metal. It will do the job of flattening the coffee but you have probably figured out that it doesn't do a great job. Coffee tamper mats are a great replacement for coffee tamper stands and can be used on both spouted and bottomless portafilters. The corner mat also makes it easier to use with bottomless portafilters and help with stable tamping and most importantly level tamping. They are ideal for busy barista in any food business looking to keep their work areas neater and protected. It is the perfect addition for baristas who want reliable gear that’ll wont just last but are also at a great price!
