About this deal

For a brand that makes quartz watches, Citizen stands out for its mechanical timepieces as well. That’s why you’ll surely get your money’s worth with this watch. It offers exceptional value for an automatic watch at its price point. Let’s find out why it’s one of the most reliable yet affordable sport watches you can get. Overall, it’s easy to see why the Citizen NY0040 has been such a popular timepiece. I think it’s a shame that it isn’t as well known as its Seiko counterparts to be fair. Even though we recently focused our attention on the (truly impressive) Citizen Caliber 0200, this highly accomplished model is an exception for the brand. When it comes to its core range, where Citizen has long excelled, we have to look at far more accessible watches. And one, in particular, has long been a fan’s favourite, a watch with its own community, the Promaster. And today, we’ll look at the brand’s latest iteration, the Citizen Promaster Marine Automatic Diver 200m Super Titanium™ NY0100-50XE with its green dial. And even if it has moved into fashionable territories with a dial bearing the industry’s hottest colour, it remains one of the best value proposition dive watches on the market. Promaster I’m sure that when this is the case, the Promaster will get its chance to shine once again. Let’s take a closer look at this wonderfully underrated dive watch, which I feel makes for the perfect entry-level mechanical watch, or even a perfect weekend beater. Whether you wear it on the jangly OEM bracelet with its handy diver’s extension, on a vented rubber strap, or on a humble Nato strap, you really can’t go wrong.

Owner Review: Citizen Promaster Diver NY0040-41e Owner Review: Citizen Promaster Diver NY0040-41e

They’ve gone for both a brushed and polished finish which is something I’ve always been quite a fan of. The top of the casing is finished in a brushed style, however, the sides of the casing have a polished shiny finish. I tend to find this sort of design gives a watch a high-quality look. There’s more to the Citizen NY0040 than people give it credit for. It’s a great sports watch with a set of functions that work for a dive watch. Is it better than the SKX007? Perhaps, not. But it’s not as bad either. If any, it deserves the same recognition that the SKX007 gets among watch enthusiasts. It carries just about the same function but in a different way. It’s not an alternative but a great option and something that you should take into consideration as well. At 42mm in diameter and 12mm in height, the Promaster Marine Automatic Diver 200m is a respectable watch, with average dimensions for a watch of this category. The lugs are short and also well shaped, meaning that the watch sits comfortably on most wrists. What’s important, though, is the material, since this Promaster NY0100, on the contrary to the NY0040, is made of Super Titanium™, which is solid titanium coated with a proprietary surface hardening technology called Duratect. This gives the watch a handsome shine (not the usual dark grey colour, but something brighter), lightness (40% lighter than steel) and scratch-resistance, with more than 1,000Hv hardness. As a result, the watch on its bracelet weighs just 110 grams, compared to more than 150 grams for an equivalent model in stainless steel. And believe us, it does change everything once strapped around the wrist. Launched in 1997 by Citizen, the Promaster NY0040 (known to many as Citizen NY0040) is one of the most recognisable watches from the brand. Many watch enthusiasts can spot this timepiece instantly, from anywhere. Despite the changes it had undergone, it only proved iconic as ever. To this day, the watch remains in production with various iterations available. All jokes aside, I love that the Panerai designers used lume to draw a watch. Not just any watch, but a Panerai watch. You don’t need anything more than the lume to recognize the iconic appearance of the brand’s Luminor. But do not think for a minute that this is just a spectacular watch in the dark. The PAM01117 is a spectacular watch all around, also during the day. The titanium case, in combination with that stunning dark blue dial, looks amazing. Combined with the Sportech strap, this truly is one of the most spectacular releases we have seen from Panerai recently. But in all honesty, in the dark is where this watch truly shines. As Rob perfectly stated: “If ever there was a watch made for the world of Tron, this is it.”The crown is no issue to me whatsoever because I wear it on the left wrist so it shouldn’t hit anything that easily. I’m sure many people would be well aware having already seen the ISO diving certification but it’s worth mentioning that the Citizen NY0040 does have a screw down crown function. If you haven’t used a screw down crown before I’d have a read of this useful forum thread.

Citizen NY008-11E ‘Fugu’ Dive Watch Review Citizen NY008-11E ‘Fugu’ Dive Watch Review

We, at MONOCHROME, are used to seeing, touching and wearing all kinds of watches, from accessible to ultra high-end. And still, this Citizen Promaster Marine Automatic Diver 200m Super Titanium Green Dial NY0100-50XE (sorry for the long name…) is an impressive model. If you add the price into the equation, the overall quality is stunning, with a watch that rewards you with durability, comfort, resistance and, not the least of factors, a very cool design too.

Overall, the dial of this watch is clean and well-balanced. It’s basically how a basic dive watch should look and it doesn’t have unnecessary functions or information on it. Changes and upgrades from the NY004 include the shape of the lumed indices, now straight and sharp corned instead of round. The handset is changed as well, still massive and legible, but now more straight-sided, with a sort of straight cathedral-style hand for the hours, and bold, a red-trimmed arrow for the minutes. The arrow-tipped second hand is lumed, and trimmed in red also. The colored minute hand is a great feature for a working diver’s watch, as it draws the eye immediately to the most important hand on the face- and it looks very cool above water too. The strap of the NY0040 comes with the words “N.D limits” written on it. This means it has “No Decompression Limits”. To explain, this refers to the maximum amount of time that the watch can spend at certain depths before absorbing too much nitrogen before returning to the surface. As indicated by the strap, it doesn’t have that. So, it can stay at a certain depth at any given time. Right? I was completely blinded by the SKX euphoria of the watch community. I never even had the Promaster on my radar, but once it made its way there… there was no replacing it!

Right off the bat, the case of Citizen NY0040 stands out for many reasons. Sure, it comes in your typical stainless steel design and it also has a satin finish, but it also has polished sides so it’s an impressionable watch. That alone already enhances the quality of the watch, making it look high-end.My Fugu gets equal wrist time on a NATO strap and an aftermarket bracelet (I don’t particularly like rubber straps). The case shape and slightly smaller height of 12.5mm make this one of the best NATO-wearing watches I’ve owned. The Citizen NY0040 from the Citizen Promaster collection is one of the most recognizable watches among watch enthusiasts. It is distinctively sporty and has a certain look and function that many collectors vie for. The Citizen NY0040 is, indeed, a watch built to last. Such a watch is not something you can look past, especially at its price point. Powering the NY0040 is a Citizen in house movement, the Miyota 8200. This is a 21 jewel movement with a 21,600 BPH which many find to be more accurate than the Seiko SKX007, although this can cause quite the debate. After looking into the watch design, quality, features, and pricing this watch received a 9/10 from us at The Watch Blog. The bad: Not too much at this price point. The strap is quite tough, and apparently takes a while to break in. The LHD crown is not built for using on this fat boys wrist. It’s a small screw down crown and it’s very hard to wind or correct something ‘on wrist’. Not a big complaint though.
