About this deal

From the timeless Nativity story to favourite Christmas movies, storytelling has been a festive tradition for those of all ages, since time immemorial. Christmas Theatre 2022 will be one of the most crucial festive seasons in stage history. TheQR is talking to as many of those making theatre in the UK this year as possible, to play a small part in raising their profile, and opportunities for a successful run. Though many of us face a tough winter, financially speaking, a magical night of theatre offers a (warm) escape for a few hours, and if you have the expendable income available will help support the livelihoods of those who keep that magic alive. James Mayhew lives in the Suffolk countryside, surrounded by wild animals and nature, with big skies, full of light - perfect for artists. Aside from the Gaspard the Fox series, his other titles for independent Welsh publisher Graffeg are: The Knight Who Took All Day (adapted as a work for narrator and orchestra by Bernard Hughes) and illustrations for the M ouse and Mole series (by Joyce Dunbar), animated for television with the voices of Alan Bennett and Richard Briers.

Zeb is now the presenter of Smooth Classics at Seven on Classic FM, the UK’s most popular classical music station. The book launched opened with a performance of a new Christmas Carol –“Christmas Is Here” with words by Zeb Soanes and music by the great Jonathan Dove. This was an extract from the new concert work by Jonathan, an adaptation for narrator and orchestra, commissioned by the Royal Scottish National orchestra, and to be premiered in Glasgow and Edinburgh this Christmas. Zeb will be narrating and I’ll be painting live! Our final festive story arrives on the afternoon of Boxing Day, courtesy of Tim Lihoreau, as he presents The Very Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra at 2pm. Based on our recently published book of the same name, Tim explores ten orchestral instruments and some of the music that shows them off at their greatest, in a fun and informative guide to classical music for families. Classical Music Unboxed with John SuchetOver four days, from Tuesday 27 to Friday 30 December, we dedicate the day to some of the greatest classical music of all time, as decided by listeners across the UK. Every piece of music played between 9am and 5pm is taken from the current Classic FM Hall of Fame Top 300, made up of hundreds of thousands of votes each Easter. James – My husband is Spanish so our Christmas is a mix of traditions. My favourite thing is the Dia de los Reyes – The Three Kings Festival on January 6th. We always throw a party and follow the Spanish tradition of a King’s Cake, and gift-giving. It’s a wonderful way to end the festivities. Is there any particular reason why the RSNO, and Scotland are your hosts for this Christmas season? James makes all his illustrations with traditional tools, mainly using pen and ink, and watercolours. He created his own new shade of ink especially for teh Gaspard the Fox books, which he calls ‘Gaspard Red’.

Author Zeb Soanes first mentioned a possible Christmas book several years ago, a touching tale with real heart. How wonderful that this week it came to fruition as “Gaspard’s Christmas”, the 4th title in the Gaspard The Fox series, illustrated by me. After an eventful year, during which we’ve celebrated 30 years of Classic FM, 90 years of John Williams, The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and plenty more, it seems only right that we should see 2022 out in style. This December, a flute, harp, and cello trio bring a blend of classical and popular favourites to the Poole community, with free cake and hot drinks during intervals.

Not this year, I’ll be flying to Mexico on Christmas Day. But they do have foxes, the kit fox ( Vulpes macrotis), so I may make friends with one of Gaspard’s distant cousins although I will need to brush up my Spanish! Nearly 100 years ago, JM Barrie gifted his Peter Pan royalties to @GreatOrmondSt. This inspired us to make @SMITFCharity benefit from sales of GASPARD’S CHRISTMAS in perpetuity, helping people across the UK out of homelessness. Give a gift that does a little good this Christmas.” On Thursday at 9pm, Zeb finds himself in St Paul’s Church in Knightsbridge, for a carol concert in aid of The Prince’s Foundation. This is the second book in the Gaspard series to be adapted for orchestra by Jonathan Dove. Gaspard’s Foxtrot was written from the outset with this in mind and so I wrote a story that had both musical and visual stimuli for Jonathan Dove to create his score and for James Mayhew to draw the illustrations. In this way it was a three-way creative process and the most exciting and rewarding project. Gaspard’s Christmas already existed as a story when the RSNO asked if they could commission Jonathan to also set that to music. It’s a more intimate and poignant story than Foxtrot, which is a musical adventure through the city by bus, but Jonathan’s score for Gaspard’s Christmas is so wonderfully rich and heartfelt, matched by James’ extraordinarily sensitive illustrations. Drawing snowy scenes at night isn’t easy!
