About this deal

The 14mm F1.4 DG DN is fitted with Sigma’s new High-response Linear Actuator (HLA) motor, which delivers faster, smoother, quieter and more accurate focusing than a stepping motor. This is only the third Sigma lens to be designed with this technology, ensuring very responsive focusing in all shooting situations.

U ltra-ultrawides are the toughest lenses to use well. Most people try them and get awful images with a teeny subject lost in the middle of nothing. Ultra-ultrawides are not for getting it all in; they are for getting very close to a subject to jam your viewer's nose into it. They are to bring the viewer into a scene, which requires you to get much closer than you ever have. These lenses are not for the squeamish. See How to Use Ultrawide Lenses.

Is the Sony 14mm f/1.8 G Master the newest must-have Sony-fit lens for astrophotography?

MPB puts photo and video kit into more hands, more sustainably. Every month, visual storytellers sell more than 20,000 cameras and lenses to MPB. Choose used and get affordable access to kit that doesn’t cost the earth.

Just like with sharpness, this lens is a strong performer in the center of the frame for astrophotography, but the corners are significantly weaker. That’s especially true at f/2.8, which is usually what you’ll be using for astrophotography. Cropping or stopping down can both help mitigate this issue, but those options both change the value proposition of this lens. Used on the Milky Way at f/1.8 for 10-25 seconds at ISO 3200-4000, the results on a full-frame Canon EOS 6D were impressive. Put simply, collecting more light gives you a lot more options. For example, a 25-second shot on a f/2.8 lens gets the Milky Way looking bright, but only after it's been teased-out on Photoshop. The non-extending 3.1" x 3.7" (80mm x 90mm)(dxl) size and 22.7 oz (645g) weight combine to make this a very a nice handling lens. Some flare is visible if the sun or another very bright light source is in the frame - otherwise it is well controlled. The two share a similar shape, size - and of course, convex-shaped objective element with a fixed metal lens hood. Apochromatic lenses have special lens elements (aspheric, extra-low dispersion etc) to minimize the problem, hence they usually cost more. Definition: A millimeter (symbol: mm) is a unit of length in the International System of Units (SI). It is defined in terms of the meter, as 1/1000 of a meter, or the distance traveled by light in 1/299 792 458 000 of a second.
