About this deal

If you focus the Olympus 9-18 mm at a distance of 2 meters, at a focal distance of 14 mm aperture and 5. OM System reckons it has cracked it with this impressive 16x optic, covering everything in between a wide 12mm (24mm equivalent) perspective to a telephoto 200mm (400mm equivalent). The lens does not have a distance scale or depth of field markings, and there is only one switch, which locks the lens in its open position. In the case of the Leica and Olympus, it is easier to achieve a decent bokeh with the former, not only because its aperture range is faster (2. Though designing wide-angle lenses becomes exponentially more difficult the smaller a camera's sensor gets, Micro Four Thirds nevertheless has two very compelling super-wide zoom options, plus a couple fast wide-angle primes.

We have chosen to use the Panasonic L10 as our standard test body for Four Thirds lenses purely because it gives the highest numbers in our resolution tests (which we believe is most likely due to it having a relatively weak anti-aliasing filter); this is intended simply to provide the fairest comparison to other manufacturers' systems. This is another unique lens, this time because of the focal lengths it straddles: you could see it as an ultra-wide zoom that goes right up to a standard zoom range, or as a standard zoom that also goes ultra-wide. Otherwise the Olympus is a great all-rounder and is so compact that I’ve even lost it inside my camera bag more than once! These correction parameters are encoded into the RAW file, so it is unlikely you’ll notice any of the lens’ native distortion as long as you use a popular RAW converter such as Adobe Lightroom that is capable of converting the files correctly.Unauthorized use and/or duplication of this material without express and written permission from this blog’s author and/or owner is strictly prohibited. Somewhat surprisingly, the Panasonic 7-14mm shows more CA toward the midway point and edge of the frame, but it's sharper at the edges and corners than either Olympus lens. maximum aperture is a tad restrictive and the retracting mechanism is not a deal breaker but it is a bit of a faff. He has been writing about photography technique, photo editing and digital cameras since they first appeared, and before that began his career writing about film photography. Sharpness or lack thereof isn't really the reason why I jumped between any of them tbh, tho I'm not making huge prints.

When using the two lenses for astrophotography, we noticed that the Leica produces sharper points of light and has less visible coma aberrations in comparison to the Olympus lens.

The zoom ring on the Panasonic 7-14 has a bit more resistance than the 9-18, but both are very satisfying to use.

This lens isn't a "constant" lens, in that as you increase the focal length, the maximum aperture size decreases, though the minimum aperture size remains the same.

This being a super wide-angle lens though, the vastness of the scene appearing on the screen when the lens is set to 9mm might be frightening at first.

Either way, this one lens could replace two lenses for many travel, street and architectural photographers.Even with the depth of field advantage that the slower 9-18 has…the corners on the 7-14 wide open are still better in most cases. If wide-angle is your goal, then this is the lens that would let you do it on a PEN series camera - offering a 14-28mm equivalent field of view. OM System makes so many excellent prime lens that picking just three to represent the whole spread was VERY difficult. This is ideal for panoramic photographers, because you – taking into account sufficient overlap – only need 5 shots to make a 360 degree panorama. The similarities between the Leica 8-18mm and the Olympus 9-18mm start and finish with their near-identical zoom range and centre sharpness.
