The story does seem to plateau in places, though not dip, which is literally the single, vague hair of a gripe I could even think of to try and balance out the review. While this novel is purported to be about the Wars of the Roses, Mr. Iggulden has set it in the time of the fall of the English Kingdom of France in the late 1440s and the civil unrest that followed. That said he introduces many of the real life characters that rose to prominence during those wars. They include Richard of York, descended on both sides from Edward III and father of the later Yorkist Kings, the reigning King - Henry VI and his wife Margret of Anjou, and the Neville family – including the man who would become known as the Kingmaker. The events in Stormbird take place roughly between 1443 and 1454, although Iggulden admits in his postscript notes that several items are moved around for the sake of narrative. The notes, along with the dizzying family trees provided at the start, are riveting, as they confirm most of the historical details and events.

King Henry VI is still held prisoner. His Lancastrian queen, Margaret of Anjou, rides south with an army of victorious northerners, accompanied by painted warriors from the Scottish Highlands. With the death of York, Margaret and her army seem unstoppable. The time for Julius Caesar to indulge in treacherous political battles has come. His great courage to face slave rebellion, love for a beautiful older woman and the sword of his loyal friend, Marcus Brutus has strengthened him. Once his rank is promoted, he is able to do what no other leaders of his era did.Margeret of Anjou is portrayed as a fierce queen, a strong woman and being brutal towards her enemies, namely The Duke of York. Moreover, she is convinced her side of the war is justified. It’s unsurprising that the characters/figures never realised that this is a war with no right or wrong side and is just a simple struggle for power.

With the support of the people of London, the rebellion might have succeeded, or been far more debilitating. But Cade and his men condemn their own movement by pillaging London, and the would-be overthrow triggers the rise of the House of York against the king.An exciting new historical novel which brings the past vividly to life, in all its bloodthirsty glory.

In his end notes Conn Iggulden comments on how historical fiction often involves filling in the gaps and unexplained parts of history. When this is done well, as in Stormbird, it can really help to see the known facts in the context of the attitudes and conditions of the times. This is particularly the case with the complex ‘Wars of the Roses’, where the history was of course written by the victors.

Mr. Iggulden uses these two characters to illustrate what the loss of England’s French possessions cost the common man. Born in 1971 to an English father (who was an RAF pilot during the Second World War) [1] and an Irish mother, Iggulden went to Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Primary in Ruislip, Middlesex, then attended St Martins School in Northwood, before moving on to Merchant Taylors' School. [2] He then attended St Dominic's Sixth Form College, before studying English at the University of London, [2] later going on to teach the subject for seven years, becoming head of the English department at Haydon School, where one of his students was Fearne Cotton. [3] Iggulden eventually left teaching to write his first novel, The Gates of Rome. He is married to Ella, who is from the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy, and whose family are craft pasta and ravioli producers in the region. [5] What is to follow is an very intriguing and marvellous tale of Kingship, power, loyalty, treachery and death, and in this circumstances King Henry VI must somehow seem to survive, and although supported by his very strong wife Queen Margaret, this King due to his ill health, he will feel the strain and hardships of being a King, resulting in his downfall.
