About this deal

Any layout guidelines worth using will follow the quarter wave rule as a bare minimum: you need at least a quarter wavelength-long ground plane in the dimension of polarization. An antenna’s impedance needs to align with the output impedance of the wireless module, which is generally 50 Ohms. The first Bluetooth device was revealed in 1999. It was a hands-free mobile headset that earned the "Best of show Technology Award" at COMDEX. The first Bluetooth mobile phone was the EricssonT36, but it was the revised Ericsson model T39 that actually made it to store shelves in 2001. In parallel, IBM introduced the IBM ThinkPadA30 in October2001 which was the first notebook with integrated Bluetooth. We’re not at the tuning step yet, but it’s also worth noting that all conductors near your antenna will affect your tuning requirements.

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) has fewer channels (40) than standard Bluetooth (79), but from your antenna’s perspective there’s no difference – it’s all the same frequency band. Manufacturer guidelines on ground plane length, width, clearance and matching components are usually defined to extract as much performance and signal out of your antenna as possible, but small antennas simply limit your efficiency and therefore your range. Compared to Classic Bluetooth, Bluetooth Low Energy is intended to provide considerably reduced power consumption and cost while maintaining a similar communication range. In terms of lengthening the battery life of Bluetooth devices, BLE represents a significant progression. The Audio/Video Control Transport Protocol (AVCTP) is used by the remote control profile to transfer AV/C commands over an L2CAP channel. The music control buttons on a stereo headset use this protocol to control the music player. Choosing a transmit power level is a design tradeoff between range and power consumption. The higher the transmit power, the more likely the signal can be heard at longer distances and the longer the effective range. However, increasing the transmit power increases the power consumption of your device. Think of transmit power like the volume of your voice. The louder you speak, the farther away someone can hear you but the more energy it takes.APA-M25 is a great budget entry device for directional WiFi signals. Ideal for small networks with single devices, its high gain (10dBi) panel antenna will ensure users are getting the best WiFi antenna signals from their routers at this price point. Laird Connectivity also provides a range of other solutions that utilize earlier iterations of the Bluetooth standard, including Bluetooth 4.0 and 4.2 and Bluetooth 2.0, 2.1 and 3.0. A full range of solutions that combine the capabilities of Bluetooth with other wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi and LoRa are also available from Laird Connectivity. Any bluetooth RF design will need to have the same basic types of components. Your exact configuration will depend on your design constraints. The Service Discovery Protocol (SDP) allows a device to discover services offered by other devices, and their associated parameters. For example, when you use a mobile phone with a Bluetooth headset, the phone uses SDP to determine which Bluetooth profiles the headset can use (Headset Profile, Hands Free Profile (HFP), Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) etc.) and the protocol multiplexer settings needed for the phone to connect to the headset using each of them. Each service is identified by a Universally Unique Identifier (UUID), with official services (Bluetooth profiles) assigned a short form UUID (16 bits rather than the full 128).

Radio Frequency Communications (RFCOMM) is a cable replacement protocol used for generating a virtual serial data stream. RFCOMM provides for binary data transport and emulates [[EIA-1325U-blox is claiming sub-metre indoor accuracy with development kits for Bluetooth direction-finding and positioning. The actual use case is also important to consider. If your product is worn inside the ear, any radiation sent into the body will be ineffective for signal transmission.

Version 3.0 + HS of the Bluetooth Core Specification [80] was adopted by the Bluetooth SIG on 21 April 2009. Bluetooth v3.0 + HS provides theoretical data transfer speeds of up to 24 Mbit/s, though not over the Bluetooth link itself. Instead, the Bluetooth link is used for negotiation and establishment, and the high data rate traffic is carried over a colocated 802.11 link. A PCB trace antenna which radiates and receives the electromagnetic waves that wirelessly carry information to and from other bluetooth devices; The official Bluetooth Specification tells you the frequency and bandwidth, but it gives you no guidance to navigate the vast sea of antenna options. For low bandwidth applications where higher USB bandwidth is not required and cable-free connection desired. Many product designers who otherwise know a lot about electronics have come to us for antenna design help after they chose the wrong antenna – or used a “bluetooth chip antenna” the wrong way. The ground plane on your PCB, which impacts antenna performance to such an extent that it is effectively part of the antenna itself; Use a long USB extension cable to place the Bluetooth adapter away from interference and obstacles. Select, Design, and Debug. From the available antenna options that can meet the requirements from Step 2, you’ll select an antenna and the associated RF components (see the next section for the list). If you did the preceding 2 steps, the antenna you choose in Step 3 will be compatible with your PCB layout and will deliver the efficiency you need to cover the distances appropriate for your product. Yes, we’ll cover that in a separate blog post, too. If you hunt around, you can even find “ultra miniature” 0402 SMT antennas that are only 1mm long! So why not just grab a 1mm chip antenna and design your product around it?

Unlike other wireless technologies, Bluetooth technology is designed to support a wide range of achievable ranges between two devices, providing developers tremendous flexibility to create wireless solutions that best meet the needs of their target use case. I'm not an expert in this field but I know that RPI can't have metal case in case of antenna on board (if you want usable wireless).

Bluetooth Core Specification version 2.1 + EDR was adopted by the Bluetooth SIG on 26 July 2007. [80] An in-balance antenna is smaller in size, but it uses the PCB grounding as part of the antenna system, whereas a balanced antenna can function by itself although it is bigger. If the size of the product permits, it is better to choose a balanced antenna. If this is not possible, choose an appropriately sized PCB grounding. The 2.4 GHz ISM band has a narrow bandwidth (only 3.5% of the center frequency). Bluetooth RF designs are therefore more tolerant of dielectric loading than, say, cellphone designs, but be careful: your tuning requirements to dial in that bandwidth will still become more sensitive for an “electrically small” antenna. In this article we will review four popular techniques for countering these effects. Each technique brings a unique set of advantages and design challenges to consider. 1. 'Window' your enclosure
