About this deal

The ProtectiveClean 4300 is one of the simplest brushes to use. It has only one button that turns it off and on. The button is well-placed and is very comfortable to push. We like the rubberized cover which also ensures that it is waterproof and will not collect grime. To be called a sonic toothbrush this vibration must be at a speed that causes and audible hum. This is up to about 20,000 Hz (or vibrations per second). Vibrations faster than this are “ultrasonic” and can not be heard by the human ear. Both Sonicare and Oral-B make it more difficult than it needs to be to choose a toothbrush. They offer so many models, with such similar features at various price points, which is why we try to keep our own recommendations simple.

In our lab test, it took 13 hours to go from a completely empty battery to full, which is better than the manufacturers claim of “up to 24 hours” for a full charge, and about average for all the brushes we tested. Basically, this means that if you plug the brush in and charge it all day, it will be fully charged and ready to go by the time you go to bed. What else does it do? In 2014, Klukowaska et al again concluded that the oscillating rotating brush from Oral-B outperforming Sonicare. They reported With the more premium Genius 9000, you get the handle, multiple brush heads, a charging stand, a brush head storage compartment, a travel case and smartphone holder. Some people complain that the pressure sensor is too easily triggered. We found that it did engage at the lowest level of all our brushes at about 240 grams of force. The industry standard is between 250-350 grams. This sudden loss of power can be annoying, but it also teaches you to let the Sonicare vibrations do the work rather than trying to scrub too hard and risk damaging your gums! Brush heads The reason behind this power difference primarily is the battery technology used. Sonicare have for a long time been using the more desirable lithium-ion batteries whereas Oral-B have only just begun using lithium and although improved from older standards have not quite perfected it yet like Philips. We also like that the 4300 comes with a pressure sensor. It is not as advanced as its big brother, the DiamondClean Smart with its LED light, but this brush will automatically sense when you push too hard, and the power will cut out to let you know that you need to lighten up. You can also find a tongue cleaner starter kit that comes with a special tongue cleaning brush and bottle of mouthwash. But it is a bit overpriced at 21 pounds. This is actually the cheapest brush in the ProtectiveClean range and the one we rate as best value for money, all things considered.
