About this deal

The Reflecta x66-Scan works completely independent of a PC. As with a digital camera, the captured images are stored on an SD memory card, but this is not included with the scanner. SD cards with a size of up to 128 gigabytes are supported. This should also be enough for mass scans. Thus, the device works PC-independently and is powered via a mini-USB power supply. The device is operated via 5 push buttons on the front of the device and via a display on the top of the device. The display has a size of 4.3 inches (10.9 cm) and is also used to display the scans. The device can also be connected to an external monitor via an HDMI-A cable.

ArcSoft PhotoImpression 6 is simple to handle and it's quite fun to spice up the photos with this software. One can of course not compare the volume of functions with Adobe ® Photoshop ® Elements, but this software alone would already costs nearly as much as the Reflecta xScan including PhotoImpression. Picture quality Reflecta states the scan time for an image as less than 2 seconds. We can confirm this value; the scan time is therefore not important in practice. It is also not so much the time that the scanner or camera needs to take the picture, because the actual exposure takes place in a fraction of a second, as is well known, but rather the time of the subsequent image processing and image storage on the memory card. The Reflecta RPS 10M features both a single slide slot for scanning one slide at a time, as well as a means to automatically load and batch scan 35mm film strips and 35mm roll films. This said, it's one of the few film scanners offering the possibility of digitizing entire film rolls. The mechanics are the same as in the predecessor model: film strips are inserted sideways and then drawn in automatically. In addition, the film can then be moved manually via the hard keys on the scanner case. Film strips should contain at least three images, otherwise they might get caught in the process. The upper limit of images for batch scanning amounts to 36 images - perfectly adequate for standard 35mm films. Since framed slides are inserted directly into the slot at the front of device, there is no need for film holders. For the sake of completeness it should be noted that the Nikon Super CoolScan 5000, in conjunction with the optionally available film roll adapter SA-30, as the only alternative, can also handle entire film rolls. In terms of price and quality, this combination ranges in a completely different league. Scanning 35mm framed slides with the Reflecta RPS 10M The connection to the computer works with an USB 2.0 interface at the DigitDia 7000. A Firewire interface, which was included at the older DigitDia 4000, is not available any more. The USB 2.0 standard is downward compatible, i.e. you can connect the DigitDia also with an USB 1.0 interface. However, it is better to use a USB 2.0 interface, since large data amounts have to be transferred to the computer after scanning a slide. Wouldn't it be advisable for the manufacturer to change to a modern USB 3.0 interface? No! Of course, USB 3.0 is much faster than USB 2.0, however, considering the scan times of several minutes, a reduction in the data transfer in the range of a second would not be noticeable. If one makes a scan with Reflecta's xScan using the highest resolution of 1800 dpi, then one receives a picture with an effective resolution of 1500 dpi. This means that the scan of a 35mm format (36x24 mm) has 3 megapixels of picture information. Good film scanners retrieve 10-20 megapixels from 35mm images.

First, the film type is entered on the scanner. Pressing the OK/Enter key takes you to the submenu where you can choose between negative strips, slides and B&W films. Use the arrow keys Left and Right to select the format and confirm with OK/Enter. Finally, for KB you can choose between 126KPK (Instamatic) and 135 (35mm) and for medium format between 127VPK (4x4 Rollfim) or 120 (medium format in the versions 60x45, 60x60, 60x70, 60x80 or 60x90). With OK/Enter you confirm the selection again. Die Scangeschwindigkeit des Reflecta x66-ScanOf the many functions for image optimization in SilverFast, MultiExposure is one of the most pleasant, as this function will always do good, never harm. Hence, it can confidently be activated at all times, leading to an increased image quality of film material with a high dynamic range. Images of less dynamic range will not be affected by MultiExposure. But now to the device itself: The Reflecta x66-Scan is a multi-format scanner that can handle numerous film types. The standard medium format holder can be used to digitize medium format films (type 120) in the formats 6x4.5 to 6x9cm. The medium format holder also includes an insert that can be used to reduce the scan area to 4x4cm 127 films. The slide holder can hold 6 mounted 35mm slides in landscape orientation, and the film strip holder can hold a filmstrip up to 6 frames long. The term ICE technology, which was the denomination for the infrared-based dust- and scratch removal with the RPS 7200, has been replaced by the term MagicTouch with the RPS 10M. This change is observable during all model changes of reflecta and is attributable to a name change in license regulations. The RPS 10M is the only device amongst all reflecta scanners to flaunt the company logo, situated on top of the device, in the very center of the case. We achieved the above scanning times on a computer with 3 GHz Pentium processor and 2 GB main memory. The scanner was connected through an USB 2.0 connection. The transfer times increase substantially, if one uses a much slower USB 1.x connection instead of an USB 2.0 one. Summary, re The reflecta x66-Scan is a true all-rounder: from 35mm film strips to mounted 35mm slides to Instamatic films, it can process almost anything in this size range up to medium format 6x9cm. Since it runs PC-independently, you don't need to worry about software versions and system requirements. The image quality is perfectly adequate for standard images if you want to view the scans on screen or post them on social media. However, the unit does not extract enough image information from the films for permanent archiving.
