About this deal

It was a little confusing at the start but seemed to find its feet encouraging me to feel hopeful for the remainder of the story. DISCLOSURE: Thank you to Random House UK, Transworld Publishers via Netgalley for providing a digital ARC of No Less the Devil by Stuart MacBride for review. Also, throughout the narrative, the presence of questionable “mums” rears its head over and over again; mums who fail to adequately nurture their children, who care about these children only after they are dead. Benedict Strachan, accused of murdering a homeless man when he was only eleven, has recently been released from prison and informs McVeigh someone is after him.

We follow Lucy and Dunk all over Oldcastle and back, trying to find serial killer The Bloodsmith before he strikes again. I'm a big fan of Stuart MacBride but initially felt No Less The Devil was once again treading familiar - yet enjoyable - territory. Perhaps it's the editors and their vast team that have produced this 'punchy', 'spare', 'cutting edge', or some such marketing jargon, concoction. A large white van drifted by, blocking him from view, ‘HAVE YOU TRIED SCOTIABRAND CHICKEN MACSPORRANS YET?I immediately thought about all those people who post pictures of their cats on their social media pages (and I am guilty of this). Launching into this novel, I'd expected a tightly-plotted police procedural, featuring complex characters, gritty themes and dark humour. A smaller picture was set into it: Abby Geddes gazing out at the world with tired eyes, mouth drooping at the edges, short brown hair rumpled and unstyled.

Four mean, narrow windows punctured the far wall – separated by corkboards thumbtacked with memos and mugshots and crime-scene photos – glaring across the potholed car park behind O Division Headquarters to the boarded-up carpet warehouse that backed onto it.Although it has a flawed ending, it is still one of the most ambitious thrillers published thus far this year. A clever, disturbing story about a police officer with a terrible past and a hunt for a serial killer. Then some more freelance design work, a handful of voiceovers for local radio and video production companies and a bash at being an actor (with a small 'a'), giving it up when it became clear there was no way I was ever going to be good enough to earn a decent living. Denying she has PTSD, she refuses to discuss what happened, so it is half way through the novel before we find out. The woman plucked a packet of paracetamol from the shelf and clacked towards the checkouts on a pair of Cuban-heeled boots.
