About this deal

Nick Holland has also written award winning poetry and his play 'Rudisha' was performed in London in 2012 to coincide with the Olympic games. For example, "The handle was turned carefully, with one hand resting upon the hilt of his sword, but once inside, much to Guy's relief, it was apparent he was alone". Today protesters wear his mask, families burn his effigy, and he is an instantly recognisable name and face. The author gives insight to the subject matter that I felt was compelling and would recommend this book to a friend.

He shows how Fawkes was deeply affected by the capture and execution of Catholic martyr Margaret Clitherow, whose family were known to Fawkes and his parents. Non-fiction is a slippery genre for many people, often considered too boring in contrast with the much popular Fiction. The bulk of it is around 200 pages, so it's not massively detailed, but certainly more than enough for a good insight into Guy Fawkes' life. I finished reading an advance copy of Nick Holland's new biography of Fawkes on November 5, a day in which much of Britain celebrates Fawkes' memory by burning his effigy. A passionate man of faith who keeps his words by actions, the image of Guy Fawkes overlaps with that of Father Mendoza in the film “The Mission”, who tried to revolt against the tyrannical oppression of despotism suppressing a freedom of wills and faith incompatible with its claim of totalitarian supremacy over individualism.

Radcliffe is a victim, able to see that the plot is doomed, but unable to escape because she is bonded by her vows of marriage. He goes back to Guy Fawkes' youth growing up in a Protestant family in York, a city which was never completely won over by the Reformation.

During 1840, Ainsworth simultaneously wrote The Tower of London and Guy Fawkes, both initially published as serials. They are all held in the Tower of London, and Viviana, who is by then dying, convinces Fawkes to repent.

The book ends when the conspiracy to blow up Parliament fails on 5 November 1605 and Fawkes is arrested. They held the secretive Catholic community together, and their large ambition was to recover England for Rome. In read this because it's November and I realised I know nothing about why we have Guy Fawkes night. I really didn’t know anything about Guy Fawkes besides he was about to blow up British Parliament and got caught. His is a very thorough biography on Fawkes analogous to the sleuthing done by Robert Cecil, the royal administrator whose spy network stopped Fawkes.
