When I read the description for Helen Hiebert's book "The Art of Papercraft. Unique one-Sheet Projects Using Origami, Weaving, Quilling, Pop-Up, and Other Inventive Techniques", published by Storey Publishing, LLC, on NetGalley, my first reaction was: I want to review this book. Helen Hiebert is a author, paper maker, teacher and artist and presents 40 unique and distinctive projects from various artists as well as further samples of their work. Hiebert states: "This book will show you how cutting, folding, twisting, tearing, weaving, crumpling, and more can transform a single sheet of paper into fantastic and sometimes unbelievable forms. I hope that you will be inspired to invent your own creations and explore paper beyond the single sheet. The possibilities are endless (p. 2)." The projects range from easy to challenging. Some projects use marbling, stamping, or stenciling whereas others use stretching, weaving, po-ups, origami, cutting, folding or quilling and in this they can inspire a broad range of readers. The Cutting chapter covers ten projects that are completed by making before or after folding. Again there are written and photographic instructions to follow, alongside the materials required. I liked the layout: a comprehensive introduction with tools, sourcing, supplies, and more is followed by the tutorials arranged by craft - folding, cutting, construction, and papermaking and surface treatments. Each of the tutorials contains a description with methods and techniques, tools and supplies list in a highlighted text box (measurements in American standard units), and step by step instructions accompanied by photographs.

Paper Making and Surface Treatments provides a list of the variety of techniques to make your own paper: to know how to make the paper itself the author refers to another of their books. Once past this list, there are 11 examples of how to use embellishments on the surface of a paper, such as fasteners, slip-on sleeves or a cut to fold into. I would recommend it to anyone looking to get into papercraft, and for any library craft sections. Some of the projects would also work well for library programming for children, adults, or teens. And for this reason I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys working with paper. Whether you take up a papercraft project alone, as a group of friends, with kids, or in a community, this will feed all your creative cravings and leave you with a stunning piece of art at the end.

The results therefore cover a wide range of approaches and difficulties. Depending on your expectations and needs, that can be both great... or not so great. The Art of Papercraft Unique One-Sheet Projects Using Origami, Weaving, Quilling, Pop-Up, and Other Inventive Techniques by Helen Hiebert is a unique book full of paper creations for children to adults. Well designed and the steps are greatly appreciated which encourages anyone from a beginner paper artist to an experienced paper artist. Ideal for those rainy days, family time on the weekends or even to do by oneself or as a group of friends or family during short or long holiday breaks. Envelopes, paper gift boxes can be created in the correct size to put in your created pieces to send. Instructions that guide you to the correct tools, paper and other much needed equipment or tools to complete the paper art. I’m certainly going to buy the actual book and keeping on the art, craft and hobbies section of the bookshelf. A paper art book I recommended for any family who loves to create paper art, crafts and hobbies or families who wish to begin a new way to create paper art and interact and communicate in togetherness.

Creative Play

For each project in this book, you can see another project of the artist who created it - an object of the same type as the one you can make by following the steps, but more advanced, or made on a professional level. This means you can get a bit of know-how, and also an idea about the possibilities of the craft, when you're advanced enough to know what you're doing. There are several little sidebars featuring tidbits and pictures of the works of various other artists which are quite lovely and inspirational too. The projects were beautifully illustrated by the work of an artist, and it was lovely to see what can be achieved in the hands of an expert. However I thought that some of the projects went from ridiculously easy (a name card? seriously?) to much more difficult, with not much at the intermediary level. this book told me about paper types that I’ve never heard of before. I was searching the internet for different suppliers, looking for various types.

Some look highly impressive, while others aren't likely to wow. This can be a bit frustrating both if you want an accessible book for kids, and if you have experience in a particular area and you're looking for projects beyond the basics. Likewise, if you want to explore one area of papercraft in depth, you're likely to be disappointed. If you’ve been following my social media channels it shouldn’t be a surprise why I read this book. Always on the hunt for new crafting techniques, I loved how the author presents the art of crafting with paper to the reader. As a child I recall going to a paper mill in the Cheddar Gorge area and seeing how the fibres come together, so knew this book 'The Art of Papercraft' would be interesting to review.Included at the rear of the book are twenty-one templates that are used in a variety of the above projects, be it for a one-sheet tree, pop-up dragonfly, or the alphabet.

Hiebert treats us to full-color renditions of her paper-thin fine art, beautifully photographed and presented for all of us to admire. Like a cookbook, this author shares the necessary tools, techniques, and methods for creating paperwork masterpieces. Then she instructs, informs, and inspires. When I started reading the section with projects, I was a little wary at the simplicity of them. However, the book showcases a nice progression of projects. They are organized by different papercraft techniques, and progress from easy to more and more difficult. The photo and text instructions are well laid out and fun to follow, and there are over forty projects to try out. I love to craft and create in various mediums, and over the past several years have delved into paper with enthusiasm. But sadly, I think my biggest hobby may be collecting crafting books. I am always looking to be inspired, and perusing crafting books and magazines are a huge source of that for me.I was not expecting much from this one, thinking it would be a simplistic book on how to make some simple projects like pinwheels, top and side fold cards, and that what is described as unique is not so unique. But I was pleasantly surprised. I like that Ms. Hiebert laid things out so clearly. This seems to me a book that can cater to an audience of both beginners and some with experience in crafting. I like that she included a couple of glue recipes in the materials description section, and that several of the projects, like the origami ones, had nice step by step pictorials. Sample project! Make a beautiful papercut cube as seen in the first photo, one of the book's 40 projects: Exploding Cube Tutorial First, I would like to extend thanks to Net Galley and Storey Publishibng for providing this book without charge in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. This book was a nice surprise! Paper is one of my “life loves”. I love the feel of paper texture and I’m always on the lookout for unique paper types, especially when using paper for cards for special people in my life. I loved severa things about this book: This is a multi-craft tutorial guide which uses paper as primary material in the crafting. The crafts and projects are varied and provide a solid basis for learning to use paper in many forms as an artistic medium. The book is superbly well photographed throughout and the tutorials are full of clear color photos which are easy to understand. I am impressed by the organization and clear instructions in The Art of Papercraft. The end of the book has a dictionary of terms, bibliography and extensive list of resources as well as templates for projects. The Art of Papercraft will inspire crafters, dabblers, and paper afficionados of all ages.
