About this deal

NME declared the Arctic Monkeys "Our Generation's Most Important Band", and Alex Turner's lyrics and depiction of Sheffield, and the night lives of teenagers in particular, were praised, with him being labelled as a "master of observation". stars out of 5 -- "Fashion and hype be damned -- this is thrilling, incontrovertible evidence of a major new talent in our midst.

Every song is, at worst, above average, while most could make equal claim to single of the year to this point. The only thing I have against this album is that I don't think of it as quintessential vinyl material- there isn't a great deal of difference in the vinyl and the digital versions.

The songwriting delivers a mix of the observational storytelling of Davies and Weller crossed with the harsher documentary eye of Mike Skinner of The Streets and "Ghost Town"-era Specials. THAT is what makes this album so impressive to me - the sum of its parts is stronger than any album I've heard in a long time.

Yeah, is a surreal, funky, profane, and perversely joyous album, overflowing with casual eclecticism and giddy humour. Released in 2006, the Arctic Monkeys' debut album was fairly typical of the 'good' (in my opinion) music that was in the charts at the time. elsewhere, there were grim tales of girls whod ended up on the streets (she dont do major credit cards, i doubt she does receipts sun goes down) and glorious swipes at the rocknroll clones that arose on the back of the great garage rock boom of 2002 (yeah i'd like to tell you all my problems/you're not from new york city, you're from rotherham fake tales of san francisco).

Containing thirteen tracks including the hit single "I Bet That You Look Good on the Dancefloor", Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not is a remarkable modern British debut. Many critics and figures in the British media hyped the Arctic Monkeys and their rapid rise to acclaim through unconventional means.

When I first heard the energy of this new band's music, and the irresistible vocals of Alex Turner, I was drawn to it immediately. With their kicky hooks, the songs owe more to Warped Tour thrashers than to stoic post-punk inspirations. Not only was it good, it was impressive, the whole CD sounded so raw, yet polished, that you would think that the Monkeys had been established for years. When Whatever People Say I Am hit the streets in January 2006, it sold a gobsmacking 118,501 copies within its first week of release, which not only made it the fastest selling debut ever, but it sold more than the rest of the Top 20 combined a remarkable achievement by any measure. You can hear The Kinks, you can sense The Smiths and a love of the 60s but most of all you can hear The Arctic Monkeys. I could hear in their sound both the Libertines and Franz Ferdinand, bands which were by then well established. The Arctic Monkeys' debut had loud guitars, fast paced singing, and is an even mix of 'in-your-face' punk and indie, so 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not' was my idea of a very good album.
