About this deal

I have the Turnigy charger which is similar in look to the one Andy mentioned and that works well too.

Yaesu FT-817 Battery Replacement FNB-72, FNB-85 - subtel

enjoy the novelty of working a pedestrian mobile station >1000km away as much as you did working them. Can I ask if you have considered an internal LIPO rather than external ones? There is a flat 2.5Ah 11v 3S lipo that sits nicely in the battery bay in the FT817 and by my experience will give a good two hours activation on 5W SSB output.

This is not a strictly fair comparison, because I did not make a recording before the FT-817 microphone was modified. I think even the uncompressed audio using the electret mike is an improvement over the original. Again, there isn't a huge difference in loudness between compressor on and compressor off, due to the AGC effect. The compressed version sounds compressed, and the uncompressed audio is certainly more hi-fi. To make the most of the enhanced conditions put together a portable 'grab and go' station so you can be out pedestrian mobile at a moment's notice. This includes your FT-817/FT-818, a battery suitable for Poor receiver. A contest-grade receiver isn't expected nor required in a radio of this type, but the FT-817's receiver seems poorer than it need be. Even using an inefficient short whip, strong local stations can overload it. The main problem seems to be bleedover (apologies for the CB term, but it sounds just like a cheap CB radio) due to the inadequate IF filter fitted. A better filter is available as a (pretty expensive) option, but you can only fit one accessory filter, which is a problem if you want a narrow filter for CW. So have you used the 3D Printed, 18650-filled version that is featured at the top of this forum? I did see that I could buy like a windcamp lipo that fits there fine, but I like the idea of using 18650s because I have a pile of them. The FT-817/FT-818 has a wide voltage range but you want to avoid a battery that gives around the extremes of this. Too low a voltage (eg 8 - 9 volts) will mean the FT-817/FT-818 won't be able to put out its full 5 watts

Computer control

It’s basically a nicely designed 3D-printable part for 3 x 18650 Li-Ion cells, load balancer, fuse, etc. Thanks to a new cover, the cell can be charged while inserted in the rig.
