About this deal

I savored this book over a whole week, it wanted me to power through it in a couple of sittings, but i deliberately drew it out, teasing out the enjoyment, the pain, the betrayals, the reversal of fortune, the ecstasy of victory, the bitter pill of defeat, the horror of war, the stress of battle, the knowledge of defeat and the heroism of surrender rather than dogged resistance ending with the ultimate and futile death of thousands. His previous two series, on Julius Caesar and on the Mongol Khans of Central Asia, describe the founding of the greatest empires of their day and were number one bestsellers. Set a generation after his Athenian series, it follows Pericles' rise in Athens, the formation of the Delian League, and the Battle of the Eurymedon.

The Duke of York, Richard, has long eyed the throne of England, and finds ways to plot against the King. In telling the story of the Nobles – Richard of York is presented as very ambitious and slightly menacing, his wife equally so.For one, if you should accept this challenge (War of the Roses) then you're in it for the longhaul as this book jus stops.

Black cloth-covered boards, silver titles on spine; map front endpapers, illustrated rear endpapers. This is due to him being able to get deep into the mindsets, providing them with a sense of grounding quite unlike any other, making sure that they stay in the reader’s mind long after they’ve put the book down. Conn Iggulden’s writing wonderfully captures the dark, brutal and gritty world of 15th Century England, filling the world with nuanced and balanced characters throughout. A peasent uprising starting in Kent, this was probably the most successful of the many rebellions that occurred at the time. He is married to Ella, who is from the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy, and whose family are craft pasta and ravioli producers in the region. The Earls of Salisbury and Warwick make up a formidable trinity with Richard, and together they seek to break the support of Henry. Most authors are quick to dismiss de la Pole as an inept blunderer but it all looks very different from his point of view. Dealing with it on a purely factual basis, he takes a look at the politics and the balances of power that were happening at this precise moment in time. Paper planes, stink bombs and fire-starting: The Dangerous Book for Boys has a sequel, and it's less PC than ever". If you were a fan of Conn Iggulden’s first book in the “Wars of the Roses” series “Stormbird”, I strongly encourage you to read “Trinity”.

Because he can let free reign to his imagination, and his experiences from travelling the Mongolian steppes. It's clear how Conn Iggulden has become one of our best-selling historical fiction authors - and I'm looking forward to the next in the series, which he says he is planned as a trilogy but will probably end up as a four or five parter. I’ve always loved historical fiction as a genre and cut my teeth on Hornblower and Tai-Pan, Flashman, Sharpe and Jack Aubrey. Throughout the entire lead up, battle and its aftermath Conn Iggulden tells his tale with an impartial insight and compassionate approach to viewpoint of the narrative.

For a while i almost had to check that it was really was written by Conn Iggulden, the style felt different, older, more mature. In August 2014, Iggulden was one of 200 public figures who signed a letter to The Guardian, opposing Scottish independence in the run-up to September's referendum on that issue. I have not included a dozen minor skirmishes, but that feud played a key part in deciding where the Nevilles and the Percys stood in the first battle of St. His Lancastrian Queen rides south with an army of victorious northerners, accompanied by painted warriors from the Scottish Highlands.

If you want a great historical fiction book that is engaging about the unrest in England before the Wars of the Roses, I highly recommend “Wars of the Roses: Stormbird” by Conn Iggulden. It covers around eighty topics, from building a soapbox racer and tying knots, to learning about famous battles and how to make potassium aluminium sulphate crystals. In Warwick, especially, we get well developed motives, alongside a sense of morality (if slightly twisted and self-serving) that leaves him pondering his own actions and choices.
