About this deal

The class and I enjoyed reading the story and role playing Limas families attempts to cool down Limas mouth. The story book is in two different languages, making it a get choice of book in schools with a high number of EAL students. Following the lesson, the children had an opportunity to taste different food and there was a focus on their reactions to different types of food. In the next lesson, the children will have an opportunity to write about the food they tried and describe their reactions to the food. Lima lands herself in a situation familiar to all children who have found themselves unable to resist the temptation of something forbidden. Infused with gentle humour, David Mills' lively tale inspires children to be curious and open minded about the world around them. Useful for exploring the five senses, 'Lima's Red Hot Chilli Pepper' introduces readers to different foods and encourages creative problem solving skills. Lima's family's trial-and-error experiments make a fantastic addition to any science lesson. This title can also be used for developing role-plays and building more complex vocabulary.

This story introduces children to different types of food and drink. In EYFS and KS1 I would use this to plan for an activity on food tasting. The children could role-play being Lima and trying all of the different foods. I would then ask the children to describe what the food looked like, how it tasted and its texture. With your child play a call and response game – taking turns with one of you suggesting something Lima might have tried and the other one replying with how it tasted. You could use foods mentioned in the story and add your own ideas, for example: 1 st person – Lima tried the coconut, 2 nd person – But it was too hard. 1 st person – Lima tried the lemon, 2 nd person – But it was too bitter. Visit a food market Books, flash cards, posters and other products must be unmarked, unwritten on, unbent, and in new condition.

Lima's Red Hot Chilli by David Mills is a fantastic, colourful book which would be great to read to children in reception or KS1. Chn make a list of 3 food items they like – draw them and describe it using noun phrases, expanded noun phrases I loved reading this book to my children in my SBT 1. I read it over and over again to them over a period of two weeks and I never got bored of it myself. Before reading the book to your child look through it yourself and think about how you will read it – the more dramatic the better to show Read aloud Did you know Howard Primary School was built in 1897 and opened in April 1898? That is 122 years ago…
