About this deal

As you might imagine, it’s a whole lot harder in a large container… a container that’s sometimes opaque on several sides.

Truly, even the classic carboy and demijohn bottles – each long favored by the terrarium industry – were originally made to brew beer and wine. Bottle terrariums are the epitome of style + function. In context, a vivarium is a container that’s designed and optimized to cultivate a particular type of life/environment. This is true of all the “ariums” and their various inhabitants (e.g., aquariums). Your reptile’s water bowl is best placed on the cool side of the terrarium. This will slow down evaporation and keep the water at a comfortable temperature for drinking.

Plastic Water/Soda Bottle Terrarium– A great one to do with the kids, plastic soda bottles are cheap and super easy to get started with. For maximum volume and versatility, start with a 2 liter bottle. Add a pop of colour to lush greenery with the following, which grow well in both open and closed containers: Raised bottom plate on terrarium to mount a substrate heater to heat a part of the extended ground surface. Marisa ( Nephrolepis exaltata ‘Marisa’) – A compact Sword fern with very dark green, lacy fronds that set it apart from other types. Averages 6-8” tall. Tank size and species will determine the style and strength of the light fixture. Long terrariums are usually fitted for strip lights and tall terrarium for dome lamps, with bulbs of varying strengths made for each one.

The trident-shaped leaves of the Pteris ferns or the heart-shaped leaves of the Heart Leaf Fern both come on long thing stems. Or, a single leaf of the Crocodile Fern adds enough color and texture to command your attention. The unusual bluish-green elongated and paw-shaped fronds of the Blue Rabbit’s Foot Fern look incredible in a terrarium. This isn’t always a small fern, so it’s best for larger terrarium setups. It is an epiphyte, so it needs something to attach to. But in practice, a glass bottle terrarium is generally a very different build to a plastic bottle terrarium. For those new to the concept of the Wardian Case, we deep-dive into it – along with the man of the hour, Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward – in a previous article on the History of the Terrarium).

In terms of size, the minimum mentioned earlier was 30 cm by 30 cm. By this stage, you know what you need to house in your terrarium before you even consider the plants you’re going to grow in it so you’re likely thinking space-wise, it’s going to get compact fast. Now, before we move on to the substrate layer, we need to make sure it can’t fall into our freshly made foundation. Foliage – The stars of the show. Foliage plants are simply those with eye-catching leaves, and they’re typically placed in the foreground of a vivarium as a focal point. You don’t need many of these, just a few to make the view pop! Wash the tank and décor using a sponge with hot water and a nontoxic soap (e.g. Dawn detergent). Fully clean the floor and sides. Marcgravia umbellata – This variety sports dusty green leaves with white edges and veining that really stand out.Not a strawberry plant and not a begonia, this beautiful creeping perennial is charming in a terrarium. The foliage is dark-green and rounded with vivid silver markings along the veins and a strawberry-red colored underside. It grows to about 8” tall and will slowly spread out as much as you let it. As it grows, it sends out thin red tendrils to stabilize itself for more growth. Polka Dot Plants (Hypoestes) REPTI ZOO’s large terrarium has several unique design elements that put it above and beyond other tanks in its category. Extra mesh ventilation panels also make this tank ideal for arid reptiles that need low humidity. This list covers the best vines, ferns, and foliage plants to make your terrarium really stand out. Which ones to choose, though, rests with you. Get creative, don’t be afraid to experiment, and have fun – terrariums are such a joy to watch grow over time! Types of Terrariums
