About this deal

Candidates must be aware that ‘Initial Verification’ is only practicable in the first instance of electrical installation. Any future testing of this circuit should be referred to under the periodic inspection banner. Initial Verification Regulation 514.9.2 has been introduced to advise that all diagrams, charts, and information or instruction notices comply with the applicable standards specified. This is an entirely new chapter. Historically, utility companies have managed the public transmission and distribution network from the point of view of having central production adapted to demand variation. The objective of this chapter is to provide requirements, such that, low-voltage electrical installations are compatible with the current and future ways to deliver safely the electrical energy to current-using equipment either from the public network or from other local sources.

The following paragraphs review how a specific ‘part’ of the book may materialise in an examination question format. We’ll be using section 6 for this, which alludes to the inspection and testing of electrical installations.

There are also four annexes which are often ignored. These cover the positioning and technical details of lights and shapes, additional signals for fishing vessels fishing in close proximity, technical details of sound signal appliances and distress signals.

Appendix 4 includes minor changes concerning a cable surrounded by thermal insulation. Appendix 6 Model forms for certification and reporting The 18th Edition book is predominantly used by, but not limited to, electricians and electrical contractors. If you are an electrician, you are probably already extremely familiar with the Regs. It not only supports domestic and commercial installations, but it also underpins electrical practices in environments like agricultural premises, caravans, external lighting, mobile units, temporary installations, fairgrounds, highway equipment and street lighting. Regulation 443.5 (Risk assessment method) has been deleted and Annex A443 (examples of calculated risk level CRL for use of SPDs) has also been deleted. Section 514 - Identification and notices Is all about the book. What BS7671 does and does not apply to (Chapter 11 ‘Scope’) along with the purpose of the regulations (Chapter 12 ‘Object’) and the basic principles that all electrical installations should adhere to (Chapter 13 ‘Fundamental Principles’). Table 51 has been modified slightly to take into account changes of colour identification for DC and abbreviations have been added. The information covered in this section is general and related to fundamental principles you will need to adopt prior to beginning design work. Anyone who has sailed in the busy waters of the UK will be thankful that the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, more commonly known as the COLREGS, were introduced. NOTE 1: Completion of an electrical installation designed to the withdrawn standard can be subject to the contractual agreement between all parties involved. The Wiring Regulations book is published by the IET and the BSI (British Standards Institution), who jointly manage a committee called JPEL/64. This committee is made up of representatives from across the UK electrotechnical industries, and is responsible for developing the Regs. Not only this, but the JPEL/64 committee has an obligation to engage with over-arching European and international committees (CENELEC and IEC), for the advancement of all standards and to support electrotechnical harmonisation across the globe.

The wiring regulations have been regularly updated ever since to reflect both new developments in wiring and updated modes of best practice. They remained the responsibility of the Society who later became known as the Institute of Electrical Engineers. They now tend to be referred to by their acronym, the IET. Over the years, regulatory standards across nations and continents have become increasingly aligned. This began in 1981 when the regulations aligned with those of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). In 1992, the British Standards Institute ( BSI) formalised the wiring standards under BS 7671. More recently, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization has harmonised wiring regulations further. Regulation 422.1 (precautions where particular risks of fire exist) now introduces requirements for the fire safety design of the building(s) to be documented. Also, requirements have been added where cables should have an improved fire performance. Understand the requirements for selection and erection of equipment for electrical installations (14 questions, 23%) Regulation 443.4.2 requires protection against overvoltages to be considered in the case of equipment likely to produce switching overvoltages or disturbances and gives conditions.

Counterfeit warning

Regulation 651.1 defines when this testing and inspection is applicable, encouraging electricians to ask one key question: is the installation or circuit safe for continued use? Regulation 411.4.2 now recommends an additional connection to Earth, by means of an earth electrode in accordance with Chapter 54, is made to the main earthing terminal. Chapter 42 Protection against thermal effects

The BS7671:2018 examination is the same regardless of whether you’re entirely new to the field, or if you’ve completed examinations on historic wiring regulation editions. But if you’re fully up to speed on the last Regs book, you may feel confident enough to focus your revision on the changes that have occurred this time around. Minor changes have been made to the model forms and guidance for recipients. These include the addition of fields Chapter 64 contains information on ‘Initial Verification’ and Chapter 65 details ‘Periodical Inspection & Testing’ guidance. Although these areas have substantial cross-over, understanding which subject alludes to which chapter is critical in composing a positive answer.Ultimately preventing a collision is the single most important thing. So, if the action of the give way vessel alone isn’t sufficient to prevent a collision or it takes no action at all, the stand on vessel must also take action. If a collision does occur, then both vessels may be found to be at fault to a certain extent. Get to grips with the rules of the road
