About this deal

I always find unnamed protagonists to be funny. The best part of this story was the unnamed, protagonist’s inner dialog. It was flip. This created a constant level-of-amusement. Otherwise, dialog and descriptive prose were good. Plotting was rather obvious and rambling. I suppose that goes with the parody territory?

You may need to exercise a little patience with this book. The first 30% felt quite gloomy and a mix between Gravity and The Martian (the bits I did not like) His talent is a given at this point--not to mention his imagination and work ethic, judging by the rate at which he puts out quality work--but it is his heart that truly elevates his writing and, I think, defines his style. Palmer has never been the same since his father walked out twelve years ago. His elder sister, Vic, is trying to run away from the past; his younger brothers, Connor and Rob, are risking their lives to embrace it. His mother, left with nothing but anger, is just trying to forget. Across the Sand is the sequel to Sand, which I read a couple of years ago. I would suggest that if you haven’t read it, you might read that first and then read that one. Even if you read it a few years ago like me, it might be worth it to have a refresher. Original released as a serial, in Hugh Howey’s latest novel we are introduced to a family falling apart after their father left them for a better place. Actually, he left them to find a better place, but nonetheless, he left them. In his wake, his wife, daughter and three sons struggle to make it in a post-apocalyptic Colorado.

Summary: Four siblings find themselves living in Springston, a town situated on the edge of an endless desert. The only means of income is to dive into the depth and retrieve items from a lost past. Their latest discovery may just change the world they live in. 'Sand' is a masterclass in dystopian world building by an author at the peak of his powers. While this didn’t bother me too much, I did finish the book and enjoyed the unfolding human drama, the meteorologist in me wasn’t happy. In Sand, Hugh is focusing more on the relationships within a family, but he does it just as well. I love the experience of reading his stories. I especially enjoyed how open our hero is with his emotions. There is a lot of crying in this book and that’s not something I come across often with male protagonists (and it’s not really something I’m desperate for, but considering the subject matter of this book, I felt it was appropriate). Our hero’s views on emotion (in males or females) in times of war and crisis were raw and honest. In mid-2015, Howey gave up his home in Florida, and moved to St Francis Bay, Eastern Cape, South Africa. He commissioned the construction of a sailing catamaran, on which he sailed from Cape Town to Australia. [5] [6] In November of 2022, Howey married pilot and former model Shay Londre. They live in New York City, NY.

Silo is a series of post-apocalyptic science fiction books by American writer Hugh Howey. The series started in 2011 with the short story "Wool", which was later published together with four sequel novellas as a novel with the same name. Along with Wool, the series consists of Shift, Dust, three short stories, and Wool: The Graphic Novel. [1] The series has also been adapted as a comic book and an Apple TV+ television series, and has an extensive fanfiction following. Deahl, Rachel. "Hugh Howey's 'Wool' Nabbed By 20th Century Fox". Publishers Weekly . Retrieved September 30, 2012. The next section shifts from Palmer’s story to his two younger brothers: Conner and Rob. These two are waiting for Palmer to come home so they can conduct a yearly ritual that loses meaning with each passing year. In this section, we learn a bit more on how folks deal with the ever-mounting sand, and we get a better sense of their family and why they are at odds from each other. Their sister, Victoria, is afforded her own section next. And I must say, for fans of Mr. Howey’s Wool character ‘Jules’, you will not be disappointed in the strong characterization of both Victoria and Rose, her mother. These women are tough and resourceful. We learn in Victoria’s section that the men responsible for Palmer’s predicament intend far greater harm to the citizens of Colorado than anyone can imagine. The family must come together if they mean to put things right. And among all the sand surfing and diving, a new person enters their lives and changes their course forever. Their is a whole other world out there none of them are aware of and it could kill them all.Daniels, Nia (August 19, 2021). "Exclusive: AMC films Wool for Apple at temporary UK studio". The Knowledge. Archived from the original on August 31, 2021 . Retrieved September 6, 2021. Four and a half rusted and sand-blasted stars. Mr. Howey is a talent, I absolutely loved Wool and part of the challenge is the expectations it created. The setting for Wool and now Sand is brutal and post-apocalyptic. Something happened . . . we don’t know what, nuclear war, extreme climate change . . . something happened. And what’s left is sand, lots of grit, gravel, and sand. So much that there is an entire lexicon around it, which Howey reveals throughout the novel. But, somehow, people are surviving. Sand focuses on a family that persists. They are broken and shattered. They toil all day to keep the wells open. They scavenge the dunes for treasures from the past. And they sand dive . . . I’ll stop there, you’ll have to read the novel if you’re intrigued. The story is once again split up into multiple parts. The early books seems to each focus on a single POV, while the later ones jump around between them. All of our POV characters are from the same family. The children ranging in age from 10 to late 20's I believe.
