We couldn't pull him up to the table and ended up having to use the tray all of the time. We decided to put the high chair away and get a smaller booster that we could pull up to the table. On our standard size dining chair, this is the perfect size. It's small enough that my son can scoot up to the table and put his legs under the table. He is close enough that he is pulled right up to the table and his food (no big gaps for food to fall on the floor). It's nice to be able to pull him directly up to the table and not have to use a tray. The seat itself is made up of a hard plastic base that sits on the normal chair with a soft seating area that so far seems to have met with approval from little bottoms.
