About this deal

Taste: Big cherry, very sweet, then come the orange and spices. Bitter chocolate, cream, sugar, mince pies. Very Christmassy. Hints of tobacco. Beautifully balanced. When the 15 leaves you with the dry wood, the 105 end with the wine notes and a late and surprising bitterness. This philosophy has stood them in good stead. When for instance, the whisky market started to deteriorate in the 1960s, and Glenfarclas lost a major blending contract, George J Grant (1923-2002) decided to build up their assets and put more whisky in storage for own bottlings.

Glenfarclas 15yo - Majestic Wine

The still room contained one wash and one spirit/low-wines still, and again Barnard notes the age of the distillery – the stills being “fitted inside with antiquated revolving chains to prevent the wash from burning”. This is one of the best Speyside whiskies of all, made in a rich style and matured in sherry casks. Still independently family owned, this is one of Speyside’s classic and top malt whiskies. The extra ageing has concentrated the flavours tasty candied citrus peel, honey, malt and Christmas cake notes coming through. I love this whisky because it's exactly what you'd want and expect. I have a hard time imagining anyone being outright disappointed by this dram. When I drink this, two things occur to me. In 1865 Hay sold the distillery and farmlands to a local cattleman, John Grant, who was keen on the land, but not the distillery. Grant leased the distillery to his cousin, John Smith. Smith ran the Glenfarclas Distillery until 1870 when he went off to establish another nearby – Cragganmore. The UK’s only retail and commercial drinks specialist. I opened this whisky on Christmas eve and how appropriate it was. A sweet, full-bodied and warming whisky perfect for a night together with your loved ones while a blizzard rages outside the window.

Glenfarclas has never disappointed even though heavily sherried whiskys aren't always my favourite style. The 15 seems a perennial favourite with many and I have sat on this bottle for almost two years before opening it a few weeks ago. No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. Quite demanding sherry bottling, sometimes without dried fruit. Very dry from start to finish. But definitely complex and exciting. Quite thin for a barrel strength, or, if you want to put it positively, alcohol well integrated.

Glenfarclas 15 Year Old Whisky | Master of Malt

Nozinan good review. Your notes are consistent to my experience: dark chocolate and red fruits. I quite like the 15 a lot. Yet I find that Glenfarclas's "house style" really shines once you reach 21 onwards, yet becoming more gentle. Neat - right off the bat I get the same vegetal smell as I get from the Bladnoch 12. Could this be the effect of sulfur? I’ll give it 10 min in the glass uncovered, then cover it for 5 and see what happens. Palate: Big bodied, sherry, wee smoke ad peat notes, dried fruits , sugared candy , dark chocolate. big body and very comforting With water, the fresh green grape aromas pop out of the glass alongside some sherry notes. There are definitely some nutty notes as well as honey wafting out of the glass. The smoke is slightly more prominent, but we aren’t talking Laphroaiggian levels here. The palate is more buttery and fruity, and less cakey with water. The finish reveals icing sugar, vanilla frosting and a touch of orange zest bitterness with water. This is tasty both ways, but I prefer it neat.

Finish: vanilla, oak spices (nutmeg more than cloves), more sultanas, barley, a weak Earl Grey tea note (is it pretentious to say bergamot?) lingers alongside a touch of smoke. One; this distillery (the 15 year old bottling in particular) has achieved a level of balance that other distilleries could only dream of. On its own you have more wood, sherry of course, I've been told that Turkish Delight is there but although I can sense sweetness this eludes me. Sweet and hot nuts like you get in pubs (or used too) is the finishing taste, with a lot of the flavours seem to dilute rather than being enhanced so try this more without adding water. Easy start, oily / silky mouthfeel. Starts with different citrus flavors, especially grapefruit and lemon, then the fruit turns to peach. Burnt caramel, roasted hazelnuts. Then slowly spicy, pepper, nutmeg, dark chocolate. Suddenly some sulfur comes up, it wasn't noticeable on the nose.
