It’s also a shoe that’s a great match for high intensity interval training. Now that Nike is moving to a more breathable design, that’s only going to increase its appeal for anyone that grabs kettlebells or gets down to do Tabata push-ups on the regular.

The Nike Metcon 6 looks an awful lot like the Nike Metcon 5. What are the differences? The 6 has a super-breathable upper, and a few minor style changes. That said, it is definitely an improvement. Cross-training shoes really cover a wide range of the market these days. You can find models that cater to nearly every niche type of training you can imagine. This can be overwhelming, but here are a few key factors to think about when considering what to look for in cross-training shoes. Working Out Or Day-to-Day? As opposed to the lower midsole and outsole construction blend of the Nike Metcon 6, you can clearly see the well-defined Nike React Foam midsole in the Metcon 7. The circles in the image below highlight the Nike React Midsole in the Metcon 7. With agility and plyometrics, I think this model does a fairly good job at supporting performance. It’s stable and the split insole construction does provide a bit of responsiveness in the forefoot. This is pretty noticeable during repetitive bounding activities. Finding shoes to accommodate wide feet can be a pain. Thankfully within the cross-training niche, you have several good options available as a wider foot can mean a more stable foot, which can ultimately benefit your workouts. Our current favorite for wide feet is the Reebok Nano X2.

As we mentioned earlier, the real compelling change from the Nike Metcon 5 is the new super-breathable upper.

In the Nike Metcon 7, the outsole has been brought in slightly at mid-foot and the heel now has more convexity to it. The tread also has been redone from the previous Nike Metcon 5 and 6 outsole tread.Here’s a closeup of the upper on the Nike Metcon 5. It’s a dual layer material with 3d haptic print on top for durability. It wasn’t bad, but it’s definitely not breathable like the Metcon 6. Notice from the side that the rope wrap is big and helps protect the upper of the shoe when you are doing rope climbs – which can involve a LOT of friction on the shoe. The men’s version of the “Robot” Metcon 6 AMP is as stylish as the women’s version – but a little more manly and subdued.
