Louisa Guy was sent to Slough House after she lost a tail involved in gun smuggling. She is one of the most competent agents and appears in every book. She and Min Harper had a brief but intense affair which ended in tragic circumstances. There are several novellas that introduce new characters and expand the Slough House world. They’re worth reading in sequence.And on we go……..is there an active spy ring, is there a network of sleepers, did whoever set this up want it so obviously discovered, it would cast doubt on all they had believed from Hess in the past? Was Hess playing the Germans to make believe he had a ring in place, so he could extort funds for his retirement – just a scam in effect? Or was it just meant to look like a scam, to ensure the actual sleeper was in place and ignored?

The story follows the lives of the agents who are in the Slough House and how eager they are to prove their worth. Many psychological and emotional aspects of the story work under the hood and give this series the drive and the “standout” factor. This is just the first story. There are four more stories, each with a unique twist and an excellent horror theme. A great story (along with other short stories) is about a couple who, by mistake, get into the wrong house and then go through a robbery attempt. Nothing is more exciting than grabbing a cup of hot coffee and getting into the thrilling and mysterious world of crime novels. The tension, the thrill, and the payoff at the end give the readers a memorable experience. I made the choice of reading one book out of sequence because it was convenient. Mistake!
