About this deal

Darien's streets and courts and homes and taverns are a bonfire on the hill, a beacon of life and light in the world. It is an old school Fantasy novel, which is strong on character and in which readers are able to immerse themselves in. Paper planes, stink bombs and fire-starting: The Dangerous Book for Boys has a sequel, and it's less PC than ever". Iggulden explains his desire to leave the character when he still had much left to accomplish, rather than tracing him through to his eventual downfall, as he did with Julius Caesar and Genghis Khan.

Shiang - Penguin Books UK

Before the sun rises again, five destinies are going to have been made, and lost, in the city of Darien. Perhaps because I was treated with this gem of a sequence, the ending, although very good, fulfilling and expertly composed seemed a bit flatter in comparison. This switching of perspectives is administered well and it never becomes confusing or disorientating.

It covers around eighty topics, from building a soapbox racer and tying knots, to learning about famous battles and how to make potassium aluminium sulphate crystals. In 2017, Conn Iggulden released the first book in his first fiction fantasy series, Darien: Empire of Salt. In August 2014, Iggulden was one of 200 public figures who were signatories to a letter to The Guardian opposing Scottish independence in the run-up to September's referendum on that issue. This city is a place of slow and quiet dignity, like a guy eating rice with a razor pressed against his throat.Tellius, Speaker to the Council, knows this divided city will never stand against such a terrible foe. It is in the second part of the book where the pace steps up a gear as these characters begin to connect together and affect each other. Darien is the name of a huge city in this fantasy world that houses over a quarter of a million citizens and the majority of the narrative is set within the city walls. The delicate balance of centuries is undone with the sudden spill of blood, and in the darkness, there is something horrible that comes back to Shiang.

At North Africa, a group of roman legionaries turn their eyes and hopes to their leader, Julius Caesar. There is one scene which bizarrely reminded me of Disney's Aladdin that is excellent and magic focused. To conclude, this is an impressive, action-packed, character focused take on fantasy by the excellent Iggulden. He went to Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Primary in Ruislip, Middlesex, then attended St Martins School in Northwood, before moving on to Merchant Taylors' School. The book concentrates on an aging Roman Empire and the early days of Julius Caesar who would become the world’s most powerful ruler.
