I recommend the book Black Is a Rainbow Color as a means to both acknowledge how the color black is loaded with historical baggage, but is also a strong color that reflects a powerful culture as well. I have personally found this works especially well with children on the autistic spectrum and very young (pre-verbal) children. Black and Brown children may internalize that their skin is inferior to lighter skin and that they should be mad or even unfeeling while lighter-skinned children should be happy. In 1957, Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat became the prototype for one of Random House’s best-selling series, Beginner Books. I bought a copy because I was already familiar with it from the past having read my bros one when he was younger and he threw his copy out. Seuss’s first children’s book, And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street, hit the market in 1937, and the world of children’s literature was changed forever! Yellow and pink days are happy like buzzing bees and jumping flamingos, directly in contrast to black days like mad and loud wolves, howling and growling at every cloud.

This book is a wonder because it helps put emotions and moods into simple color terms the kids can grasp, helping them process and move on. That said, when we read it, my son is happy to discuss how he has been feeling and it prompts conversation about what he has done that day (when getting this info is like getting blood out of a stone usually)! Geisel saw his original text about feelings and moods as part of the "first book ever to be based on beautiful illustrations and sensational color". These colors have the modifier bright attached to them because other shades of red and blue can be characterized as darker, which would oppositely be aligned with low energy. Dark colors represent emotions ranging from anger to sadness, while light colors represent emotions like happiness.Seuss, Thedor Geisel also used the pen name Theo LeSieg (Geisel backwards) for books written by him, but illustrated by others. My Many Colored Days Book Review Teaching for Change (2021) by Paige Pagan: https://socialjusticebooks. Having read it a few times, my 6yo will pick this up at random times to help show us the colour of her mood. An innovative concept book that introduces children to colours, feelings and all the fun of Dr Seuss.

We have had the odd conversation after reading it that reflects the colour of the day that we have had - or how we felt in colours when we fell out or did something fun. Works based on his original stories have won three Oscars, three Emmys, three Grammys, and a Peabody. Bought for my gradaughter who’s 6 and had some medical treatment that was very difficult for her and I wanted a book about our feelings .This can foster negative self-concept for Black and Brown children and teach misleading information about various identities and diversity. Based on a 2007 online poll, the National Education Association listed the book in its "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children". My Many Colored Days intends to teach early elementary children that it is normal to experience different emotions on different days and even on the same day, which sometimes makes it hard to understand and express yourself. it's a fast read for Seuss, and so deep and meaningful, I wish there were adult versions and a self help series built around this concept for the parents!

I'm reading it with my 3year old and the no pressure no drama style means some days she wants to talk about feelings in the book and other days she'd rather just list the animals illustrated inside - and that's perfect for us as it provokes thought and discussion rather then force feeding information. A rhyming story, it describes each day in terms of a particular color which is in turn associated with a specific emotion.Accompanying a manuscript Geisel wrote in 1974 was a letter outlining his hopes of finding "a great color artist who will not be dominated by me". This made for a great talking point about feelings and how they can come and go but not define our personality with my nursery drama class. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.
