About this deal

The barefoot design means Vivobarefoot shoes are wider around the toe box, to allow them to sprawl and grip the terrain with better foot engagement. Going outside in the mud, an upper body workout at the park, or nightclub is what these shoes are great for. Plus, they’re so far from what I’m used to wearing to hike in that I was worried they’d leave me limping my way back to the trailhead never wanting to hike again. However, I found that the laces on the Magna Trail lineup have frayed and become destroyed rather quickly, and I reckon this will happen to the Magna Forest ESC as they seem identical. The second generation offers more specialised options depending on which way you shift from urban to nature exploration, but the Magna Trail is a staple that hits the sweet spot nicely and is well worth the premium for bare feet health, design and construction.

If walking without socks (as some prefer), it allows for some foot movement, without feeling too loose, depending on your how tight you lace up. I wouldn’t say these are waterproof barefoot shoes, but they’ll certainly repel snow/sludge/water in the majority of scenarios. Something to mention about the style too – I think they look pretty sharp and appropriate for many scenarios! And because of the sock-fit at the ankle you can actually afford to go as deep as you dare right up to the ankle cuff. As for the outsole grip, they’ve handled degradation well, with treads still offering plenty of traction up to this time.

By wearing minimalist shoes you can develop stronger feet, improve posture, and enhance overall foot and lower body health. Water resistant vegan upper made from recycled materials, reusing post-consumer plastic waste, helping to reduce landfill. The shoes are made in Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam), and they claim the leather is sourced from small-scale farmers and the wool is sustainably sourced. However on my first short walk with them, not going through any difficult bush scrub or anything, I noticed quite a scratch on the toe box. Re)new and improved - remade with more sustainable materials that have reduced the impact this footwear has on the planet. Definitely go a size bigger if you want to have some room for your toes to splay, and possibly 2 sizes if you want to wear toe separators, and/or a metatarsal pad.

They’ll be tough to get on at first and the break-in period isn’t great regardless, but they’ll feel a little more snug. Check out my Vivobarefoot Magna Trail review video right down below for a full rundown and in real life test on how these shoes perform. The sole is fairly thin, and on rocky/gravelly trails I can feel the ground a little too much for my liking.

These are water-resistant up to the neoprene tongue and liner which is roughly 5cm or so but unless you’re splashing in streams, it’ll handle your everyday and tougher outdoor days just fine.If you enjoy exploring the outdoors no matter the weather conditions, the Vivobarefoot Magna Trail is an incredibly versatile shoe to rise to the occasion. I’ve done some free climbing, bouldering, mountaineering, and more stuff which required a level of grip. They provide minimal support, yet are comfortable and lightweight making you feel nimble on the trail.
