I do understand why this novel won so many important prizes. It is in many ways a compelling story. I didn't particularly like the way it was told, but I must admit there is something in it. Moreover, I must admit that I struggled with this novel, especially in the start. The middle part dragged on for a bit too long as well. In addition, I had a few issues with the writing, one of them being the portrayal of the protagonist Nami. I did feel sorry for him, but because of the way he was written it was hard for me to deeply care about him. I understand that Nami has been traumatized and that obviously influenced his thinking and numbed emotions, yet as a reader I needed to know more a bit more about him. Why he does think and feel is often a mystery.In addition to a stellar career at LSU, Bell represented the USA Junior National Team and Team USA throughout her playing time. Visi žinome kas jis ir kas per vienas operavo penkmečio planais – turi būti! nieko nežinau! bet kokia kaina! Nafta, medvilnė, koks skirtumas – tuojaus pat! dabar pat! Įžvelgiau netgi vartotojiškumo kultūros problemos pradmenus. All in all, I enjoyed this different and unique novel. I stopped at a few places, and it made me think. But it will not appeal to all readers, especially those that expect a typical post-apocalyptical or dystopian novel.

Ežeras kiek fantastiškas, neegzistuoja jokiame laike ir vietoje, tačiau tuo pat metu be galo konkretus kiekvienam jį skaitančiam. Ir nors norėjosi sužinoti daugiau „kaip“ ir „kodėl“ apie Namį, geriau jį pažinti ir giliau jį suprasti, galbūt autorės tikslas ir buvo palikti šiuos klausimus užsipildyti patiems. Tamsus ir gąsdinantis, tačiau visada primenantis namus. Visa aprėpiantis, daugumos pragyvenimo šaltinis, tačiau senkantis. Apipintas mitų ir legendų, magiškas, tačiau pražūtingas. Kartais teikiantis vilties, o kartais skelbiantis pavojų. Neišvengiamas kaip ir bėgantis gyvenimas, kaip mirtis. Užsitarnaujantis pasitikėjimą, tačiau galiausiai apgaunantis. Not only environment is toxic (vomiting and eczema are pretty common), but also many relationships. Some places (and also events) in the story are very extraordinary, but on the other hand, they also seem a bit familiar. The novel feels post-apocalyptical because we can’t imagine places like this on our planet. But they do exist. Čia panašus kodas, kaip kad ČERNOBYLIS, arba man netgi siejosi su Kazuo Ishiguro „Neleisk man išeiti“ atveju - kai skaitytojo dėmesį pritraukia klonavimas - o liūdesį sukelia tai, jog tokia mistiška tema ne tokia jau ir ryški pačiame kūrinyje. Tai taip, noriu pasakyti, kad jei jus labiausiai intriguoja Aralo jūra ir jos katastrofa, tai šis kūrinys ne jums. Palyginimui - Lietuvoje gan didelės sėkmės susilaukusi ir daug kam žinoma „Baba Dunja“ - tai kiek šiame kūrinyje Černobylio, tiek „Ežere“ Aralo. (P.S. visų trijų knygų panašiomis šiaip nelaikyčiau) Buvo dalykų, kurie nepatiko, kad ir dažnai minima erekcija. Kažkaip keista visame kūrinio kontekste. Nors pati knyga man patiko, bet tai suvulgarino ją. Galbūt, per tai parodė, kad personažas dar gyvas.Podobný překvapení jsem hodně dlouho nezažil. The novel’s protagonist, Nami, is born and raised by his grandparents in this forbidding environment. He has no idea of his father’s identity, and only a vague recollection of his absent mother. Following the death of his grandparents, he sets off on a journey of discovery with the elusive and distant aim of eventually finding his mother and reconciling himself with his hidden past. I can understand the critical acclaim received by the novel. Through its theme of the “personal Odyssey”, it taps into the reserves of myth and legend which give gravitas to this coming-of-age story. At the same time, the dystopian elements and reference to climate change give The Lake a gritty, contemporary edge. Yet, it is a novel which I found difficult to actually “like”. It is unremittingly, uncompromisingly bleak and confronts the protagonist (and reader) with all sorts of tragedies and degrading situations. I’ve read countless horror stories which are jollier than this. Although the ending vaguely suggests the possibility of hope, this remains a distant glimmer. None of the characters is perfect (not least Nami himself) although possibly some of the stronger female characters, Zaza in particular, come close.

A well-written novel then and, in its own dark way, an unforgettable experience but one which should be approached in the right mood, and with full understanding that this will be no comfort read.
