About this deal

When to feed?We feed all year round, as the birds can come to relay on this. In our current garden we have at least 4 generations of birds that have only known this food being available year-round, (some species, including goldfinches, have more than one brood a year). Their long and thin beaks are perfect for extracting seeds, which is why their diets are, to a large extent, plant-based. Goldfinches will eat more thistles and teasels toward the end of summer, as they flower later than many smaller plants.

Habitats favoured by European goldfinches include open woodlands, parklands, grasslands, farmlands, orchards and scrubland. We all feel welcome when someone lays out a meal of our favourite food for us, and the goldfinch is no exception. An easy way to start attracting the goldfinches is to put out two of their bird food favourites: Sunflower seeds and mealworms. How to attract Goldfinches to your gardenEuropean Goldfinches do sometimes migrate in September and October. They are partial migrants and the majority of Goldfinches that leave the country are females.

For the Nyger seeds you will need a special Nyger seed feeder as the seed is so small it just falls out of standard feeder holes. Courtship starts with the male doing a dance where he sways from side to side, drops his wings to display their yellow banding and serenades the female. If you have the space, it can be useful to have a selection of feeding areas in the garden.Different areas can give space for different family groups to eat. Goldfinches are known as partial migrants, meaning that some of the UK goldfinch population migrate each year to warmer climes, usually in France or Spain. They do not tend to have wintering grounds, instead preferring to go wherever there are opportunities for feeding. Evidence also shows that female goldfinches are more likely to depart for winter than male goldfinches. The best way to attract Goldfinches to your garden is to hang feeders that contain their favourite food, nyjer seeds. Goldfinches love them as they are similar to thistle seeds, which is what they would eat in the wild.Goldfinches sleep on the inner branches of trees, close to the trunk, which provides shelter and warmth. Most people will tell you to plant teasels to attract the goldfinch – and yes these are a good idea. But it’s a little known fact that only the males can eat teasel seeds, as they have slightly longer beaks than the female goldfinch. The Goldfinch’s like the edge of forests and areas with scattered trees and bushes, including orchards, gardens and parks. They also frequent farmland. What do Goldfinches eat? The main collective noun for goldfinches is a charm. However, you may also call a group of goldfinches a chirm, a drum, a troubling or a pantheon [iii] . Can You Add To Our Collective Nouns for Birds List?

After laying the last egg, the female will start sitting on her eggs to keep them warm. This marks the beginning of the incubation period. From this point, it will take the eggs 13-15 days to hatch. Over the next few decades all these birds fell into serious decline, sadly, in common with so many species. So, between their plummeting numbers and me having less free time (compared to when I was a lad), sightings became few and far between. There are many collective nouns for magpies, but perhaps the most common names for a group of magpies are a conventicle, gulp, mischief, tidings or tribe of magpies [i] . What’s The Collective Noun For A Group of Crows? When visiting garden feeders Goldfinches prefer nyjer seeds and sunflower hearts. How to Attract Goldfinches to Your Garden? Roll forward a few more years and bird feeding was becoming a mainstream pastime and good companies like mine where investing in research to optimise the nutritional value of the food on offer. Specialist seeds such as Niger Seed, Safflower and Teasel Seeds were also becoming available and where especially attractive to goldfinches and their cousins. Offering such foods worked and goldfinches started to feed in gardens more often and extended their feeding visits over ever more months. Relatively shallow is good, so a medium plant saucer works well if you haven't got space for a birdbath. Favourite foods? Goldfinches are not endangered, and have a healthy, stable population in the UK of an estimated 1.7 million breeding pairs.
