These are minor grumbles, though. On the whole, I’d thoroughly recommend Wolf and its author to anyone who enjoys dark, creepy and, at times, rather terrifying thrillers. Soap star Sian Reese-Williams appears in Wolf as DI Maia Lincoln, who was involved in the original investigation into the ‘Donkey Pitch’ murders.

Since as far as I can see the book doesn’t set out to be anything more substantial than entertainment, then it all comes down to whether the reader finds the subject matter entertaining. I didn’t. In truth, I found it to be reasonably well written unsavoury pulp with an absurd plot, and am entirely untempted to read any more of Hayder’s work. For which I imagine we are all grateful… Any issues with the book list you are seeing? Or is there an author or series we don’t have? Let me know!

As I was reading, I would be thinking “I really want to play that scene” and then I’d read the next one and think the same. When I got to episode five, I read this particular scene and I just instantly thought, “right, I’m in”. I’ve been looking to play a different kind of character and I just loved Molina’s journey. It’s been nice to do the comedy, stupidity and lightness of him. The Telegraph values your comments but kindly requests all posts are on topic, constructive and respectful. To get into all of that was a real joy.

I'm not very good at knowing what other people are thinking, but I do know that you can see tragedy, real tragedy, sitting just inside a person's gaze. Retrieved 24 May 2023. In most crime novels the violent act, usually the murder, is the engine. Take that away and there is little left to drive the story along. So I do get a little cross with authors who aren’t precise about the violence they’re using to create tension because I feel they’re being dishonest with their readers. If people don’t like the blood and violence in my books, fine, they can always close the cover and put it aside and maybe read a romance instead. – Mo Hayder” She followed Birdman with The Treatment, which opens with the discovery of a husband and wife found beaten and restrained at their home, their young son missing; the Observer called it “a bleak, powerful story of child abuse”.
