About this deal

Until relatively recently, eight was about the largest group that could be included via intercom at the same time. Now we have Bluetooth Mesh, which theoretically can allow as many people into a group as you want: the maximum we’ve seen so far is 24, which is pretty impressive. The only problem is that Bluetooth Mesh doesn’t play well with other devices, which means you lose GPS and FM radio. That isn’t really acceptable to most, so manufacturers have added a second Bluetooth processor to restore full functionality. The downside is cost. At the moment, Bluetooth Mesh-enabled helmets are among the most expensive. Added functionality Double-D is the choice of racers and gives a very secure fit every time you put the lid on, with a really simple mechanism, but it’s hard to use if you have your gloves on. OK, the bluetooth headset integration is why you’re going to buy a Sena Savage, so here’s the score. Shoei NXR2 | The Shoei NXR2 has excellent aerodynamics and a great visor. If you have the budget, knowing which one suits you best between this and the Arai Quantic is impossible without trying them both on. But you’ll be delighted with either. Having said that, with it’s AIM shell that usually scores well in SHARP safety tests and a good rating for noise attenuation (for an open face helmet at any rate) it’s still one of the highest scores we’ve given a helmet without a chin bar. Which is saying something.

For example, the retro Shoei Glamster’s got an AIM shell and that scored 4 stars out of 5 when tested by SHARP. Same with the Ex Zero and Neotech II– both AIM shells and both 4 star rated. Overall then, if you’re looking for a high quality open face helmet that acts as if it were a full face in terms of comfort, aero and features, then you needn’t look any further than the Shoei J-Cruise. It’s really very good. Safety (more about helmet safety) OK, it’s an open face helmet so you’re gonna get venting in the front. But if you ride in the heat of summer, things are going to heat up around your scalp. Might not be an issue for some, but if you think it might be for you, there are open face helmets out there with basic vents in that really make a difference (looking at you Arai Urban V and Shoei J-Cruise)

That outer shell is available in four sizes to dial in a perfect fit. The EPS interior structure has five densities to provide maximum impact protection. It also comes in four sizes to help riders get a perfect fit. But having said that, noise perception is always going to be just that… perception. It’s what you think that matters. And in the case of the J-Cruise II the vast majority of owners we found say they’re more than happy with the noise levels on the move, and that it’s super quiet for an open face helmet. Running along one of the straps is the microUSB charging port, making it easy to get to. It’s not got any weather protection, so while I haven’t had any problems –and open face helmets aren’t the usual choice of all-weather commuters – it’s just worth being aware of, if only to make sure it’s dry before plugging the charger in. It’s a shame you can’t update the Sena via your smartphone, but like many current electronic devices, you’ll need to plug it into a computer. Fortunately the PC or Mac Device Manager software is easy to install on your computer and guides you through the process. There’s only been one update necessary in the several months I’ve been using the helmet, and that was to introduce iOS13 compatibility. The intercom is one of the biggest successes of the Sena Savage. Most owners found it easy to pair with another Savage headset and most think the quality’s great. The slower you go, the better the perception of voice sound quality, but you can hold a conversation up to around 60-70 on most motorcycle types (faired or unfaired).

A. Maybe, maybe not. If they share the same Bluetooth brand, it should be okay. Also, sometimes two helmet makers might seem to use different Bluetooth brands when they’re actually made by the same company, so pairing might be possible. The problem is that it’s often difficult to find out who makes what, especially with cheaper helmets. You can measure the circumference of your head – just above the eyes –to work out what size you should be, but keep in mind that you might be a medium in one brand, but a small in another. And some brands use different shapes in their range. Some Bluetooth devices support voice activation, while others opt for discreet button controls mounted on the helmet. So, Shoei’s taken that first helmet and tried to make the J-Cruise II that bit better in what seems to be more or less every area. They say it’s slightly lighter, better venting, has improved aero, a better sealing main visor and a slightly deeper sun visor.
