About this deal

The album was recorded during an early reunion festival, held at Broughton Castle in August 1981, before that event finally settled in its current Cropredy venue. [2] It features a reunion appearance by Richard Thompson and the first public performance in some years by Judy Dyble. a b Christgau, Robert (10 July 1969). "Consumer Guide (1)". The Village Voice . The song has become Fairport Convention's unofficial anthem. [4] At their concerts, including the ongoing Cropredy Festival, it is often performed as the last song and a signal to fans that there will be no more encores. [5]

I'm generally not a fan of compilation/greatist hits albums. They invariably hit the high points, but during this time. So the beauty of Fotheringay is offset by the relatively bland, derivative Mr. Lacey.

This song captivates me still, after 50+ years. Takes me to the deep South and the poverty of some who lived thru truly hard times. And the powerful spirit of a poor young girl being abandoned to her future with only a red dress and her wits to keep her alive. early albums, there are good choices in terms of song selection, but the band was still finding its way David from Nottingham, United KingdomI want this song playing at my funeral. The song was taken from the album What We Did on Our Holidays. So, not a song about a poor girl, but a song of hope and how you can rise up no matter how far down you started. This double CD collection is effectively an updating of the superb "History of Fairport Convention" released on LP by Island records. The compilation covers Fairport's creative years from 1967 to 1975, thus capturing songs from all the albums from the eponymous debut through to "Rising for the moon". This of course means that the classics such as "Liege and Lief" and "Angel Delight" contribute some of their finery. a b c Unterberger, Richie. "Fairport Convention: What We Did on Our Holidays> Review" at AllMusic. Retrieved 7 October 2011. In a contemporary review for The Village Voice, American critic Robert Christgau deemed Fairport Convention the "most interesting unknown group" he had listened to in some time, highlighting their take on " Pentangle-style ballads" and Bob Dylan's " I'll Keep It with Mine". [12] Neal Casal, of Ryan Adams & the Cardinals, later listed What We Did on Our Holidays as one of his favourite albums of all time. [14]

Just incredible. The only reason it was remade was to scoop up a boatload of money from a more modern and accepting audience. But it is a completely different song than the other one that sounds slapped together in a few takes without a thought for the meaning.
