About this deal

The Leveling Up document can be saved for later, but if players are excited they’re free to read it right away. Once you get into the dungeon, the text of the adventure will introduce new mechanics in each numbered area.

The newest Adventure Path coming out later in January is a three part mega-dungeon set in the Otari area. The Beginner Box is a LITTLE cheaper than a Core Rulebook, but you’d get more longevity out of the latter. It’s also important to note that this encounter was designed assuming that the party has a good-aligned cleric in the party who can cast Heal. Much like a board game, you have one copy of the game manual and everyone needs to learn how to play at the same time. Once everyone has characters and has read the rules a bit and selected or created characters, it’s time to play.

Not much to say here, except that they eliminated the d100 (which I’ve noticed rarely gets used in 2E anyway), and they’re mercifully color-coded. But the Pathfinder Beginner Box is potentially a bone fide rival for anything that I have seen before. The dungeon included in the pathfinder box is excellent, with traps and puzzles and combat and a few alternate routes, it is just that, a dungeon. Also, I’d prefer a resealable dice bag over the disposable one: my first set of dice from my beginner box is down to just five dice from the original ten because they spent their lives rattling around loose in their box. In closing, if you’re a longtime fan of tabletop roleplaying games, how could you NOT love the Beginner Box?

I got this rule wrong while running the encounter, and it nearly resulted in a TPK (total party kill). Weirdly there is no guidance on how to handle players setting the wooden barricade on fire, but if you don’t feel ready to handle that you can warn the players that the smoke wouldn’t be great for them.

If the book is being passed around, the GM should go first because they’ll also need to read the Game Master’s Guide so they’ll need some time to do that. Paizo clearly wants people to start playing as soon as possible, and I think the entire package benefits from that approach. Overall, the Pathfinder Beginner Box is an excellent product that provides everything needed to start playing the Pathfinder RPG.Keep in mind that the GM will need to make these journal entries available to the players (see GM Pre-Game Prep, below) before they’ll be visible. This is a “Gazetteer” which describes the city of Otari, where the Beginner Box adventure takes place. I didn’t do a one-for-one, but I assume most of these creatures were used directly in the adventure, but again, there’s probably also a few “extras” for the GM who wants to try and create their own content. These sheets also serve as helpful reference documents for important terms that you’ll see in the game, so even if you don’t play the pregen characters players may still find the sheets helpful to reference while playing. A randomly generated name will be added by default which you’re free to keep, and you can change the name later if you want.

Also it was released before the 5e core books, allowing groups to test out the system before potentially spending hundreds of dollars on a new game (especially after 4e lost many fans). My only complaint is the text on the back is kinda small because they had to fit a lot of info, but Paizo is not responsible for my Old Man Eyes.Other nice spots of design include magical boon rewards and defending monsters getting some home turf advantages. They are good representatives of their game and I think they both have their space and are good products for what they are trying to achieve. Players can skim the individual ancestries, the individual backounds, and the individual classes while deciding which options they would like to play, but should read their selected options in detail. but the back contains descriptions for many of the most common statuses, which is pretty evergreen stuff.
