Can Money really get you out of trouble? Praise for Silent Bones ‘I absolutely loved every minute of this. It’s a favourite series of mine and as soon as I received this it jumped straight to the top of my tbr pile. A rollercoaster ride… I’d give it 10 stars if I could .’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Reader review I highly recommend this book and the other books in the series (see below). I’m also looking forward to the next instalment of the D I Kelly Porter series Silent Bones. Detective Inspector Kelly Porter is as busy as ever but, even with its recent major changes, the snatched moments with her family are her escape from the long hours she works. Added to this Kelly has been attending the court case resulting from one of the notorious cases she has recently been involved with and unfortunately things are about to get even more complicated and high profile when, as she waits for the verdict, devastating news is sent through to her.

Major Helen Scott is very good at what she does and her reputation usually precedes her. A serving officer in the Royal Military Police, when she is assigned a case her superiors, whatever they think of her, know she will get the job done. They are flying over the park when something goes wrong with the helicopter which crashes into the mountainside of Scafell Pike causing multiple casualties and deaths as there is a fell race in progress. Thanks: My thanks to Emma at #damppebblestours for the invite to join the blog tour for The Rift and for an eCopy of the book from Canelo. Kelly and her team discover how much more there is to this investigation. It’s an investigation into the crash, yes, but as things come to light there was a lot going on with Lord Reilly and Kennedy-Craig. This is a murder investigation with lots at stake for the helicopter passengers and their families not to mention the political fallout from what happened. And by answering those questions. The team learn some dark and disturbing truths and find a killer I wasn't expecting.

I thoroughly enjoy Rachel Lynch’s DI Kelly Porter series so I was delighted to discover she was releasing this standalone thriller, The Rift. It was great to see what Rachel Lynch can do in addition to that series and she really hits the bullseye! This is now the eleventh book in the Kelly Porter series and it is still as good as ever. As in previous books, the setting is one of the main strengths, with Rachel Lynch creating a vivid image of the Lake District, helping to set the scene for some very location-specific crimes. I found it easy to picture the reservoir, the caravan park and the surrounding areas, making this a fully immersive read. In some police procedurals, it can feel like the lead detective becomes personally involved in a disproportionate amount of crime but the setting here makes it inevitable, with Kelly having to put her past behind her to remain open minded. Then two girls who are wanted as witnesses in the investigation go missing. A Private Investigator working for Lord Reilly’s family goes rogue.Silent Bones is a gripping crime thriller that takes place in the picturesque Lake District in the UK. The story revolves around DI Kelly Porter, a determined and tenacious detective who is investigating a mysterious case involving a skeleton found at the bottom of the Thirlmere reservoir during a drought.

Kelly Porter’s past is thrown into question when the bodies of two former classmates are found; one who has been missing for 24 hours and one who was murdered after the body was found. These discoveries cause her to question her memories of her family, teachers and classmates as she hunts down the culprits of these crimes. As well as having to solve a case, Kelly also has a young family to look after and this follows familiar tropes of Canelo Crime releases from Lynch's contemporaries (MJ Lee and Marion Todd) who also have domestic routines to account for. This stable of writers make clear that law enforcement have problems at home to deal with as well as the crimes to solve - and this balance or openness of relationships certainly makes the characters more relatable and sympathetic. On a misty morning in the Lake District, two men depart by helicopter from a private estate. Flying over Scafell Pike the pilot loses control, and they crash into the mountain top. Runners and bystanders are caught in the devastation. This is the scene that greets DI Kelly Porter. She attempts to coordinate the rescue efforts, though it’s clear many won’t make it, including occupants of the helicopter. Three are dead, and the fourth is badly injured. When it emerges that the survivor is none other than the Right Honourable Lord Donald Reilly, and the person who chartered the flight was notorious billionaire Bartholomew Kennedy-Craig, the media frenzy is intense. When it is learned that the helicopter had been tampered with, Kelly and her team can’t afford to make a single mistake. DI Kelly Porter was certainly a character—one that I could get behind supporting. She's a highly successful career woman who balances work and home, but not so much that readers are unable to relate to her. Even though I knew nothing about her beforehand, it was just so easy to start to root for her. I was surprised at my strong feelings towards the story once I finished the book. Similarly, the other characters were easy to remember and understand; there was not a single character that I felt disconnected to. There was just enough context to flesh out each character that appeared, whether they were a new character or one that appeared in past volumes. In Kelly's case, the parts of the novel that took a break from the case, like when she went out with her family, for example, really helped humanize Kelly in my mind. She appears as much more than just a detective, she is a mother, a friend, a childhood acquaintance turned local celebrity... This really is fabulous international thriller full of tension and twists and it races along to an explosive conclusion I loved the book it was different and very compulsive and I found myself completely immersed in the story.

The second thing I learned is that too much detail spoils the plot. Seriously. It was a good story, but there were just so many details about absolutely everything that I struggled to stay invested. I don't need to know step by step every thought a character has or every movement that they make. This is especially true when I had things figured out before the detectives. There were times when I found myself wanting to throw my Kindle (instead, I settled for closing it and setting it aside time and time again) because I found myself so frustrated with how things were going. This is a standalone from the author of the excellent DI Kelly Porter series and although totally different is every bit as captivating as her previous books. I don't usually read thrillers but as with Helen, Rachel Lynch's reputation precedes her and I loved it. The amount of research undertaken must have been staggering because this novel moves through so many different scenarios and never feels wrong or factually weak. I don't know if there will be any future outings for Helen or Grant but I will definitely be looking out for them, just in case. This is the eleventh in Rachel Lynchs excellent series and a brilliant addition. A first-class read .’ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Reader review The book begins with the discovery of human remains in the dried-up edges of one of the Lake District's stunning lakes, revealed due to falling water levels as a result of a hot summer. This gives Kelly the opportunity to solve a cold case - one which soon transpires to be a lot closer to home than she could have foreseen. Of course, in true Lynch style, the body count doesn't stay too low for long and Kelly finds herself investigating the far more recent murder of an old school pal. That sees protagonist DI Kelly Porter and her ex-Johnny called to the mountain side of Scarfell Pike. After a helicopter crashes killing dozens on the ground who were taking part in a fell race and all but one aboard.
